Gidday all,

Earlier today I picked up my new (a.k.a. second hand freshly imported) car from the yard. It is a 2008 Toyota Corolla Fielder (the station wagon version). It features a touch screen with GPS, TV, Radio, Bluetooth and all sorts of other goodies (inc onboard storage full of Japanese Pop). The only issue is its all in Japanese (as is to be expected with a Jap Import). I have figured out the basics (setting radio presets etc) however I can't for the life of me figure things like the Bluetooth out (I got to the settings screen for it, I think, but could not get my phone to find the car).

Does anybody know if:
A. The language settings can be changed to English (I'm not holding out my breath for this) or
B. The entertainment console can be upgraded/re-imaged with an English version.

I'm going to pay a visit to my Grandma tomorrow has hosts Japanese students in the hope one of them may help me atleast get bluetooth etc going but would appreciate anyone's thoughts on who I could talk to in Chch about getting it converted. I'm hesitant to go to the official Toyota dealerships as I'm not sure how accommodating they would be to be honest but that will be my last resort.

Alas the included owners manuals are all in Japanese and I can't seem to find any English versions anywhere on the WWW. Absolute last resort will be learning Japanese, and if my high school attempts are anything to go by that's doomed to fail before it starts.

Cheers,

I have a Nissan and it can't be re-programmed to work in English.

I have managed to find a couple of fairly patchy manuals on the net for settings etc, but the Sat Nav and TV etc will be useless.

About as expected! But you never know without asking a. I'll go the student route and get the basics done at least. TV is analogue so no expectations there anyway. Cheers

are you sure the TV is analogue?
Analogue TV was switched off in Japan in 2007.
.  .  . not that a digital TV for Japan would work in NZ anyway.

It's possible it might be a oneseg TV.

You're quite possibly right! Dealer didn't know anything about the TV fuctions and neither do I. All I know is I get the good old static when I switch to it.

More research suggests it may be possible to get the system converted to English through a professional with the right software.

Best to buy yourself a new head unit.
You can pick up a decent one with all the bells and whistles for under $200.

Would love to except its not a standard size or shape and I don't want to splash out for a custom mount and facing.
