Jason Kemp has posted some interesting comments to the "Digital Trends in NZ" presentation from Roy Morgan Research.

http://www.dialogcrm.com/blog/2013/09/23/digital-trends-in-nz-research/

What really stands out to me is how broadcast TV stations is loosing out.

I think frequent ad breaks and the obvious benefit of VOD online is making the online services a lot more interesting than broadcast TV.

I've basically dropped broadcast media except for radio news while in my car. I suspect that the premier league pass will act as a proof of concept for a lot of people who otherwise wouldn't have cared about streaming media, and traditional broadcast TV will have to up it's game a lot, or start losing more than just oddball early adopters like myself.

As long as I am on ADSL copper with data caps, SKY will be assured of my custom!

You can get a lot of streaming video for the cost of a sky sub.

My ADSL is coping mostly OK with streaming (NetFlix). Its not 100% perfect, but certainly good enough to be viable.

What is a bit of an unknown to us is the impact on our data cap. Due to work in our area, we are unmetered at the moment. This also means that the Telecom usage meter doesn't let us know how much we're using each month either.

Yes but so far in rural NZ, 85km from Wellington, Sky has it beat still.

I don't even bother downloading movies from iTunes (much less TV series like I used to in the UK, although since we don't get them in NZ iTunes I suppose that is moot) because it takes so long.

My old man uses his laptop+adsl for streaming 50km from Hamilton.     The specs you list in your signature should be well and truly good enough for something like Netflix.

Good point. I have slightly slower specs than that normally, and NetFlix works pretty well here. We get the occasional buffering and degradation of picture quality (still always watchable though), but it generally works well.

You haven't yet arrived in NZ, have you?

You (maybe) wouldn't believe how many ads they shove into free to air TV here now.

If I record a typical hour long show, once I've edited all the ads out, it's usually 45-48 minutes long.

That seems to be normal in the US too; stuff from iTunes tends to be 44-48 minutes.

Are the issues you do have related to your adsl or backhaul bandwidth congestion?

Even with a terabyte internet connection you will still have stuttering video if the backhaul is congested.

I think we'll find that TV streams are unmetered in future.

Also, the thing I don't like about online streaming is that you are constantly having to choose what to watch.   The TV experience where everything is programmed and you can channel flick is quiet nice sometimes.

I haven't, but I certainly watch almost nothing live. Record and then watch later, even if "later" is only 20 minutes later and while it's still recording. Being able to zip through ads is the only way the experience can be endured. Getting through an hours program in 40-45 minutes makes it painfully obvious how bad it has become.

This is, sadly, true for many Sky channels as well as Freeview. For example, the History Channel seems to have a 3 minute ad break every 8-10 minutes (and it's invariably contains the same promo over, and over, and over again!). Which does make me question what I am paying a sub for........

The part that will stop me from being 100% online for my TV needs is my download speed (not due to get fibre until ~2019). Also I agree, sometimes it's nice to just watch "what's on" instead of actively choosing a program.

It could well be. There are many factors that could be at play here. But the bottom line is that a 10Mb/s connection does give us largely acceptable NetFlix streaming. Not perfect, but good enough to warrant being paying customers.
