What do you guys think of the car service schedules, so many of you adhere to them?

I been told that maybe per year $2,500 PA is for car costs this may include the tyres and the WOF averaged out for the average motorist PA excluding maybe the insurance, regro etc.

Over the years we have been getting cars from Turners given the hassles with dealers so we juts do away without the warranty.  We've never did the service schedules, the $8,000 car seems to last 10yrs when it depreciates to maybe $2,000 and we get another used vehicle at Turners.  Is there much justification spending $2,500 PA when one could spend just $400 PA averaged out?  That would be the DIY oils and filters and tyres, brakes when requested by our mechanic.

One car we had from 2010 we did maybe 8,000km per year, (they're retired now so more like 3.000 now) we've had one set of new tyres, fluids, filters, a few bulbs and one electric fuse, the original (used) battery still going.  In a year or two may need a new one and/or some spark plugs.  Pretty much the same with a Mazda 323 we had for the 15yrs prior to 2010 when it was replaced.  That had the drive belt and the timing belt replaced and the muffler was repaired instead of a entire new one replaced, some CV joints, that was it really, was sold for $2,000  with a leaking water pump to a mechanic student.

I admit it the fuel filter was never changed, ditto the trans oil / filter.  But on some Euro's the the trans and the fuel filter are not even part of the schedule anyway .... Ditto with injection unless one picks up the symptoms.  So why spend $2,500 PA when $400 would do, what am I missing?

Cheers all :)

I service my cars every year, it is important if there is a fault and it has not been serviced the warranty may well be deemed void. It is also important for economic running and safety.

What I'm missing is how you would get to $2500. We have been putting the car into the dealer for servicing at between $350 -400pa. The difference between "service" and just an engine oil change seems to be the coolant and brake fluid being changed every 2yrs. I doubt that they check all of the things that appear on their invoice but they aren't padding the hours or changing things like plugs and air filters just because it's on a list either.

The last service we had done was on my wife's car, that was $270 including fluids and that was it's first one year service.

There is so much discrepancy in cost of servicing and maintaining vehicles depending on type, use ,etc, you can't really go "A car should cost $x per year to run".

I probably spend $1200 a year or so on maintenance averaged over 4 years, made up of an annual average of say 2x services (one minor, one moderate) of, say, $500 total, plus a WOF at $50, plus $500 in tyres, plus miscellaneous other expenses like brake pads etc. I do quite a bit more than the 'average' KM/year for an NZ driver, and am also harder on my vehicle (including the odd track day) than average.

Our other car is probably more like $350 a year on average.

Heck, at one point with an older car I would have said $130 - 2x WOFs (that were about $30 then) and a DIY oil change, and maybe the odd re-tread tyre as needed.

I know people who spend $5k+/year on vehicle maintenance, but these tend to be high-value and high-use vehicles that are taken to the dealer bang on schedule for everything.

These days I replace my car every five years. I can generally get five years out of a set of brake pads and a battery, so the only thing I ever pay for is an annual service and maybe a new set of tyres at some stage during my ownership.

Doesn't include petrol.
All stuff for the avg motorist and averaged per year.

Per year:
WOF (no after work) - 2x $50.
Insurance - $600.
Regro - $300 (is it?).
Oil change and filter at the mechanics - 2x $100-180 depending on place prob the latter for the OEM dealer (per 6 months).
Gears oil and filters ..
Fuel filter every 2yr.
Sparks every 2yr I think it is.
Battery every few yrs.
Radiator flush every few yrs.
Drive belts and timing belt each 4 and 6 yrs on avg.
Tyres maybe $800 for a set may last 4 or 5 yrs that's maybe $200 a year.
Plus there is annual service schedule cost whatever that might be - that 29 point inspection or whatever ....
You can also markup many of the figues if sent back the OEM guys ...

We have a 15yr old Toyota, doesn't go for the service schedules but just recently $500 for a engine pulley and the belt replacement.  If it was the timing belt might be $800 or $1200 at the dealer.  So averaged per year ...

We DIY the engine oil and filters that itself cost $50 for the oil and $15 filter each 6 months.

We have a 4 year old car that we bought new.

Besides $800 for 4 new tyres we have it services every 12 months (or 15000kms). Services average $350-550 depending on the service (the 60K one cost me $550 at the dealer a week or so ago). We're still on yearly WOF's.

I assume your $600 figure for insurance isn't full cover? Our is closer to $1200 a year for full cover.

I service my car and my partner's car a couple times a year (it's every 10-15,000 kms I think, too lazy to walk outside and check the sticker)

My reasoning is we are stuffed without them, and for a car to be reliable it has to be well maintained.

RE: the insurance.  It is full cover but we only insured it for $11k even thou the insurers thought the car was worth more, we got the car from Turners, had enof of dealer hassles so we did away the warranty.  It was a 2004 model car bought in 2010.  Every driver is at least 25yrs old ...

With the service schedule - don't they swap out the parts even if there is no problems but the time is due .... So they have a 1yr routine, and a 2yr and a 4yr ... etc.  10,000M, 20,000 with the coolant / brake flush / fuel filter, 40,000 drive belt and amongst others and the 60,000 when the timing belt is done.  And isn't there a 6 monthly check also for the engine oil and filter and belt inspect, brakes et al .. .etc?  The oil only last for 3,000M doesn't .... unless one is equipped with high mileage type.

I pay about $600pa for full comp on a 2009 Mazda 3 Turbo, approx 25k value, 26 years old male. Parks outside.
