Was just skimming through this realme online thingy. I'm not really sure the point? Or Are the banks going to bring in another level of security for online transactions?

The main answer for me is in the first paragraph of this page:

https://www.realme.govt.nz/what-is-realme/

I hadn't heard of Realme until I read this post.  So have signed up and are in the process of getting verified.  Getting a photo at the Post Shop was straight forward and am just waiting for the letter to my home address so I can confirm my physical address.  The overall process seemed straight forward and while not exactly cumbersome, it does need attention to the next steps.  No idea when I will get to use it - other than getting my passport reissued in about a year's time - but, hey, I like to be an early adopter of such things (assuming that this hasn't been around for years and I have missed it completely.)

I love technology and always ready to give this or that a go but for the life of me I cannot see when I would need this maybe I'm missing something. In a strange twist of fate I recently had to renew both of my passports (dual citizen) Neither of them did I need to prove who i was other than the signature matching the passport both needed to be sent in. How would Realme have played a part in this? SIDEBAR The new photo service at the post office is excellent and only $20 bargain. I hope they will incorporate the system of storing a copy online for you so you can always get extras as needed.

Want to join a new bank? Buy/sell shares online via a broker? Manage your student loan/ird/govt logins? Now(as it's slowly being implemented) rather than sending in verification and mucking about with a huge paper trail you can just be directed to login to your realme account to give them access to said information (proof of address/identity etc) and it's done.

It should be a standard way to interact with all government websites and services going forward - passports, social welfare, maybe the local council, and every other government department will eventually adopt it.

Ok I will give it a go I suppose you would only really need one thing to make it worth while!

I've been trying to complete my realme verification for a while. Have been into 2 different postshops. The first took a photo and submitted to DIA, but then I got a call to say that they did it wrong.

I went to another one (that the DIA said had the capability to verify me), but they were being renovated and they didn't have the equipment.

So far off to a bad start.

Yeah Right!I'm going to be the only one that assumes Realme wasn't chosen for the benefit of the domain .me and make the mistake of entering that domain.

Why would a NZ government service be provided on a domain that's not .govt.nz?

That would defeat any purpose of authentication - straight out of the bat it people shouldn't trust it. Having a govt.nz domain is the only way to know it's an actual government service.

Because its also for commercial use (eg banking)

We looked at it recently for a project with a government department. Looks quite good IMHO.

It can be used for other verticals but it's still a government initiative. If one is to trust it as an identification and it's being driven by a government entity then I expect it to be a govt.nz domain, seeing a .me could be any scammer from the other side of the world.

It has been around for years and you had missed it completely.  It was formerly the "i.govt login" which apparently the DIA decided was a bit of a mouthful and hard to market - especially at the high integrity private sector that they are trying to onboard with it (banks, utility companies, and the like).

Tip of the day: given all the options for verifying your identity, if you have one then choose Passport.  It means the verification code ends in P, and according to the postshop those are easy (compared to the ones that end in other letters).

Looking at it (and trying hard not to put my TFH on!) I really cannot see when I would ever use it. I avoid interacting with the government as much as possible in any case!

Heck I don't even register to vote because I don't see why I should be on a publicly accessible list in order to do so.
