Other than the chains, does anyone deal with any shoe shops in Central(ish) Auckland they recommend? I need to replace my work shoes (dress) and the last pair I ended up at a chain and found some shoes that were ok, but 8 months later, pretty tatty.

I want comfort (I have completely flat feet) over looks but need something that goes with dress trousers. I don't mind spending decent money but I am not wanting to go crazy. ($200-300 is ok)

Had a similar problem last year, purchased Hush Puppies from Hannah's and they fell apart within a few months, rubbish.

A workmate recommended Ecco Shoes, there's one in Newmarket
http://www.eccoshoes.co.nz/dress/mens-dress-shoes/

I don't see the ones I got on their website currently, but they are similar to the "Helinsiki" but no heal. Lasting really well and looking and feeling good.

I suspect they may have a bigger range instore than on the website, so it's worth popping in.

Don't go Hush Puppies! I had the soles in two pairs just disintegrate... Not good at all.

Yes their quality has really gone downhill!.

Also I would advise people to avoid the really cheap places like Number 1 shoes etc, they seem like amazing value but they are usually so "cheap" that they are "nasty".

Another vote for Ecco shoes.  Since I started wearing them I've only bought nothing else except for running shoes, and I even got a couple of casual pairs as well as the work ones.

Super comfy, great quality.  My day to day work ones are nearly 6 years old and apart from one scuff look almost new.

Don't know about disintegrate, but I had the soles on two pairs of hush puppies detach within a few weeks of their first wear. The inside came apart on another pair on (from memory) their third wear.

Build quality isn't that great......

Clarks Shoes at the Customs St end of Queens Arcade - old-school mens' shoe shop, small but a good range of quality gear.

Also Florsheim Shoes, cnr of Queen and Shortland Streets. Only have quality stuff but in a wide price range depending on what you want eg. synthetic soles vs fully-welted leather soles

I can highly recommend Ecco shoes. They're sold at many shoe stores, and they have their own stores. Go there, try and buy if you like them. Next time you need to replace them order the same shoes from Amazon.com for half the money, counting delivery, but if you try on in a store I think it's right to buy from that store at least once.

Don't go to Tarrocash either.

Shame.. I've been getting them for years and they typically last me years.

It's a tough one. I am pretty hard on shoes, so if I get a pair that lasts a year, I am happy.
That said, I have had a few pairs of Hush Puppies, and while they are comfy, the soles tend to break up.
Agree on the No.1/Warehouse shoes, just not worth the bother - I find them uncomfortable and they do not last (if I can even find them in my size).
The best pair of shoes I have owned in the last few years is a pair of Colorado slip ons that I got on the GC 3 years ago. I have worn and worn and worn them, and they are still going (wearing them today). They are a casual rather than a dress shoe, but I'd buy them again if I could find them. (Now that I've said that, they will blow out over the weekend!).

Not in Auckland but if you are coming to Wellington there is a very good one.

I am still very happy with my Florsheims...

have been back there the last few times I bought shoes.

I would recommend the shoe shop in Canterbury Arcade in Auckland CBD. I think it's called Pat Menzies?
