I don't work for these guys https://www.callzero.co.nz

They offer free landline calls if you enter your landline number, and the landline number you want to call.

You get a callback on your landline, and after entering a CAPTCHA type code, you are connected to the other landline number. All for free.

Is there some catch or is this some elaborate scam somehow?

Couldn't you abuse this to annoy people by putting their number in the 'Your landline' field and it'll phone them? lol

Anyway, I presume the 'catch' is trying to convince you to either make non-free call types, or join 2talk (who appear to be running it).

Seems to be a loss leader to generate traffic for their toll calling offering.

"How do you make money?
We're hoping that you'll love CallZero so much that you sign up for an account. That way you'll be able to make cheap calls to other destinations and we'll make enough cash to keep giving you free NZ calls!"

basically they are betting that you have enough people on mobiles that you want to call, and will sign up for their full service account

Does it really cost them very much though, if it is a tacked on service to their existing infrstructure, which their paying customers pay for?

I have tried it a few times, and it is really good, hope it stays around.

Just hope it isn't going to be abused by telemarketers. But they probably have their own systems. The call I have noted comes up as 'private' on caller display.
