Hello,

Is there any place that sells pink grapefruit in NZ (ideally Auckland but I can pay for postage if need be).
I can't find it anywhere, all usual suspects have only NZ Grapefruit which is quite different than the Pink one (found in Australia/US/Europe).

I've seen them in supermarkets and fruit n veg shops in South Auckland in the past, but your timing might be out unless there's some chilled/frozen stock still around. Season is about over in NZ I think.

I was talking about the pink variety. They've been sold next to the NZ variants in veggie shops etc during our grapefruit season.

Grapefruit are not imported into NZ from South America. Stock from Australia or the USA is imported depending on the time of the year.

There are also multiple variants of grapefruit in NZ, but pink isn't that common because it originates from from US rootstock that is patented.

I've seen pink grapefruits in the supermarket loads of times. I only shop at New World though...

It means to buy the plant stock you're paying significant royalties to the owner of the patent, and then sometimes ongoing royalties for the fruit. You wouldn't be able to grow a pink grapefruit in your back yard using one of the US varieties because you wouldn't be able to buy the product in the first place.

This is no different to many other varieties of fruit in the world. Pacific Rose apples for example were tightly controlled by EZNA and Hort Research since their commercial release in 1995. As of a few months ago you can now buy Pacific Rose from a garden centre to grow yourself after the 20 year patent on this expired. You can't go into a garden centre and buy any of the big brand modern apples such as Eve, Envy or Jazz for exactly the same reasons. A huge amount of time and effort goes into cross breeding these varieties and establishing how they will work on different rootstock so they are patented to stop foreign growers ripping off our products.

If you just want Pink Grapefruit juice there is usually plenty of that on the supermarket shelves

Thanks all. I'm after the whole fruit rather than just the juice.

So my best bet is still trying the supermarkets during a certain period of the year. From previous experience, when would that be?
