I'd like to send a sensitive file to a friend, in the tens of MB size range. We're both behind NAT, and I don't want to upload it to my web server as it's not secure. Is there any software available that would make this easy?

I looked at bittorrent sync, but it doesn't look like it's super easy to set up. Still reading though, maybe it'd be suitable.

What about sticking the file in a truecrypt container and then sending it somewhere safe?

That'd work, but it's more of a PITA. I'd still have to ftp it up and they'd have to download. Peer to peer would be better.

What about uploading to Skydrive/Google Drive/Dropbox/Cubby and sending a shared link?

I thought about that. The two disadvantages is while they're more secure it still requires trust of a third party. It's also slower, upload/download rather than a direct transfer.

I consider setting up an FTP server, but with nat and lack of encryption it's just too much hassle.

I'd recommend using sftp and port-forward (FTP over ssh). It's what I use for all my file transfers.

If it is that sensitive, put it on an encrypted usb stick and go and visit them. Dropbox does upload and download over HTTPS though and transfer speed should not be too big of a deal for a file as small as that. Less than a minute over even a 3g connection. Even use an encrypted zip file and text them the password. If you use linux, encrypt it with GPG maybe.

Do you need a certificate for sFtp? Port forwarding and getting it all working sounds like a pita.

Sometimes I transfer large files and want security, so it's sometimes much more data. Dropbox is fine for smaller stuff though.

Memory stick is what I was trying to avoid.

What issues were you having with bittorrent sync?
It's easy as to configure and all encrypted.
I guess the only insecure part is getting the secret to your friend.

I didn't try setting BT Sync up, the tutorial I read looked a bit of a pita. So it's pretty easy then? I consider txt secure enough given it's not online, i'm not sending national secrets.

Encrypt in a zip file, UUencode and post to a public location :-)

Why not make use of our friend Kim Dotcom and use MEGA? The files are encrypted pre-upload so you don't have to trust any third party.

Well you install it on your machine then choose a folder you want to sync and generate the secret key.
This can be any folder you like and you can create one just for this sync.
You can create/share as many different folders as you like, all with their own secret keys.

Get your friend to install BT Sync, then they choose any folder where they want the file/s to sync to and instead of generating a key they insert the one you give them.

You can give them a read/write secret key, meaning if you add/change/delete a file/s from the folder it will sync to your friends folder and if they do something in their sync folder on their side then those changes will sync back to your folder as well.

Or you can give them a read only secret key which means that only changes made on your side will sync to their folder and anything they do with file/s on their side don't sync back to you.

I set this up for an older couple just the other day and they got it so that tells me it is easy to use.
No firewall rules or anything like that to muck around with either.

GBridge sounds pretty good. BitTorrent sync sounds perfect though, and easy, I'll give that a go thanks :)
