So last night I decided to quit Facebook, deactivated the account and left it as that, because after going through my feed I noticed I didn't even care what half the people I'm 'friends' with were doing, I haven't spoken to most of them since high school.

Yesterday was also my birthday. Outside of my family, only 3 friends remembered. My best friend since primary school didn't even remember. So that was an interesting side effect.

Now, after some searching, it seems in some countries you can use FB messenger without a FB account, just a phone number and name. One being australia. This was announced on december of 2012 I believe, but I haven't seen anything since. Theres nothing online about how to use this outside of the 5 countries, so does anyone have any info about this? Because I still want to stay in touch with a few people and FB messenger is still the easiest for everyone i usually talk to.

I may be a stirrer but why cancel.
You dont have to look at everything or respond to every post. So what if others dont comment on whats going on. They have a life too.!!

You can block certain individuals or even unfriend people you know longer need to follow.
Refine your list to the friends you want then continue with the messenger if thats what you want.
Im certainly no expert on facebook useage but people certainly get worked up on various issues with it.
Ive got around 600 FB friends. Of course a lot are not active, get quite a few game request- just block those.
Its just another medium for communication. I use it when "I"want too.
I dont know what more can I say but perhaps take a step back.
BTW im not getting at you personally- this is what I say to others around the same subject.
You get out of it what you put in as in any social media.
Just a few thoughts

Its using the app to send sms. Its not free in nz. Why not use viber?

So is your main motivation behind "getting rid of" Facebook because you only got three happy birthday wishes on Facebook? If that is the case then I'd suggest you might want to save the energy for other issues in your life that you will encounter in future. It's really not worth worrying about.

I work on the principal that if I wouldn't stop in the street to say "hi" to someone, then they don't go on my friends list.

Took the advice in the first reply, deleted about 80% of the people on my list, I'll give it another day and go at it again.

And no I didnt remove it solely for that, it did persuade me further though to remove a lot of people. It looks so clean now with a lot less junk. Should do it more often actually.
