Hi I know this is a long shot but I am trying to find my parents (60s) a reasonable hotel for around SGD100 (around NZD100) a night near Marina Bay Sands area (Marina Parade) in May ...

any tips?

I've spent a fair bit of time in Singapore but can't think of anywhere specifically, however have a look at Booking.com or Hotels.com

You can indicate you want to search near to a specific location - set that to 'Marina Bay Sands Casino' and you'll quickly see that the best hotels are well over NZ$100. But there are a few options around that price.

I have transited through Singapore many times but hotels are over the $100 mark

I would suggest that you use the Singapore stop over package if they are flying Singapore Airlines

I have stayed at the Peninsular Plaza and also Copthorne and they are very good

one option is to stay away from Marina Bay Sands as travel by taxi is very inexpensive in Spore

Been to SG a few times. Used search engines. Nah .. not for $100NZ. You would struggle to get a real hotel that price even in Malaysia. Maybe a lodge or something like that. The thing is I heard if you go too cheap they might be love hotels... Hotel 66 might be one from SG I heard not sure if near that place though ... Maybe $150 for a proper hotel not sure in that area though. That area tends to have the pricier stuff right ... Mandarin Oriental, Pan Pacific, that new hotel in that casino building ....

For that sort of price you're either looking at a really crappy room or a backpackers

upped budget to $200 ... agoda.com gives the best deals that the hotel's official sites don't ... interesting

If they have a VISA card then compare your prices with http://visa.neatgroup.com/visa/CPMerchandisingPage?DD=VISA&headTemplate=VisaValidationCSS&bodyTemplate=VisaValidationBodyEN&isShowFramework=true

I use this all the time when travelling including for motel/hotel bookings in NZ. Majority of the time, prices are cheaper via the hotelclub deal with VISA.

Do whatever you want to do man.

Robertson Quay Hotel is reasonable - not sure how close it is but there's an MRT (Clarke Quay) a short walk away along the river.

latestay.com is another one that *sometimes* has good deals, they are a Thai booking agent, have used them without issues many times.

Also if you do find a cheaper price on a booking agent many of the big chain hotels will price match + upgrade, or beat by 20% that price.

Travel around Singapore is relatively easy with the train, bus and taxis being very easy to use.

At the lower price point I have stayed at the YMCA which is on Orchid Road (Main shopping street) and that was clean tidy and inexpensive for a room.

Last time I was there with my wife we stayed at the IBIS and I am sure that was just over $100 NZ for a night.

Use expedia and trip advisor. We find everything on those two sites for places all around the world, though we often book directly with the hotel.

Don't let price be your only criterion.

Some years ago, I passed through Singapore. Being on a tight budget, I asked a guy arriving at the airport with a backpack where he had stayed. He gave me the address and I duly rocked up and moved in. It was a bit of dive (I was OK with that), but it didn't have aircon. Never again! The next morning I checked out and found a slightly more upmarket hotel called "New 7th Storey Hotel". Catchy name, huh! It's probably been torn down now.
