Hi there.

I am wondering if anybody could give me a hand with my CV and/or Cover Letter? I am 23 Years old, wanting to get a start in the hospitality industry, to be more precise I want to be in the kitchen. I have been applying for a few kitchen hand jobs but nothing yet. I actually applied for three just under three weeks ago but haven't heard anything back from any of the employers. I understand that is somewhat normal practice (To not get an interview/anything back) however I would hate to think my CV/Cover Letter is what stopped me from progressing further.

I know my CV is lacking a bit, but am looking for ways to improve it.

Anyway, as said above I want to get into the Kitchen. I currently don't have any qualifications which would be suited to the job, however in the back of my mind I know that learning the basics of cooking and going to cooking school to get qualifications will help me. I am hoping to land a Kitchen Hand job because I think that will be good for me. I am a hard worker, reliable, team player etc.

I am hoping somebody would be able to give my CV and/or Cover letter the once over. I will however be removing all person information for both myself and my referees due to privacy. If somebody works in the hospitality industry or a recruitment agency and would be able to help then that will be awesome!

Others might disagree, but I really feel there is an art to getting a job.

The things that I swear by are:
1. Taylor your CV to the job you're going for. Not just the cover letter. This is important.
2. Follow up the CV with, at minimum, a phone call. A personal visit is much better.
3. Don't embellish. Your potential boss isn't blind. They'll notice things.
4. If you get a trial period then it's better than nothing and work your arse off. If they don't hire you at the end of it, then at the very least you've given yourself a solid chance of getting a good reference for the next job.

I've seen hundreds of CV's but never been the one to hire directly so might not be the best one to comment but can make some if you like.

Note: I don't have hospitality experience myself so that might make things not apply.

What really comes across in your post above is your enthusiasm for your chosen career path. If you are not showing that in your C.V you really need to get that in at the top.

+1 to everything on Disrespective's list.

I'd also add:

#5 include career goals
#6 include personal interests and activities

You may not think #6 is relevant but it is often a point of difference from other candidates and something you may have in common with the person interviewing you or other people already there who may have been given the task of reviewing c.v's.

This is true. I've been hired at least once due to common interests with the employer that had little to do with the job. Point of connection I suppose.
