Can someone confirm that all I need to do is turn up at the gate (I don't have checked bags) with my phone and the app open and it'll scan OK for my flights tomorrow?

I've only ever printed tickets for the scanner but was interested to know if the scanner worked on reading a phone screen.

If you've only got carry on then you don't need to check in at all (for domestic and flights leaving from NZ) - http://www.airnewzealand.co.nz/online-check-in

Yes works perfectly. You might not get an assigned seat until the gate, just check the mPass and see if you have a seat allocated (this has happened to me a couple of times but it turns out I've been given an exit row seat)

Yes. You can also just use your Airpoints card if you have one.

I did this last week Wednesday and it refused to allow me to check in any bags (which had been paid for)

Had to join this massive queue of people standing at the check-in counter staffed with one person. Didn't leave me much time to board so I'd still get to the airport on time.

Thanks for the info everyone. Much appreciated. I always figured that was the case, I just didn't want to go to my gate to only find I had to go back to get a ticket and end up rushing around/missing the flight.

At Christmas I was flying from Auckland to Christchurch with bags I need to check in. I've got the Air NZ app on my phone and I had loaded the flights into it. When I got to the airport I went up to one of the kiosks and there was a sticker saying something like "If you've got a phone with our app then just put the phone on top of the kiosk". I thought maybe it would use NFC or something to communicate but nothing happened when I laid my phone on top of the kiosk (I had the Air NZ app open at the time).

I ended up having to type in the booking reference number on the kiosk before I could get luggage labels and boarding passes printed, which I could have done without using their app at all.

Has anyone else managed to get this to work? Or did I completely misunderstand the brief instructions?

There is a guy who shows how its done but it looks like he's using one of these:

Otherwise you have to scan the QR (displayed on the phone) code at the Kiosk/Entry..

EDIT: (or I've never checked you have to place the QR code facing down on top of the kiosks and it has a QR scanner on it??)

Hmm, that's interesting. I was trying to put my phone where that guy put his RFID chip, and nothing happened for me. The little sticker on top of the kiosk, visible in that video, doesn't say that it only works for RFID chips.

I considered scanning the QR code but I wasn't sure where on the kiosk I should have held the phone up to.

After looking confused for a few seconds while I tried to figure out how to use my phone with the kiosk a staff member came up and offered to help and he got me to just type in my booking reference number and go from there.

But there must be some way to use your phone with the kiosks!

Hmmm, maybe I was thinking that the ePass (which is the RFID tag that Air NZ gives to frequent travellers) was something to do with the Air NZ app (the app name recently changed from "mPass" to "Air NZ", so that might have caused me some confusion). That explains why putting my phone on top of the kiosk didn't work!

The app description says it includes "Use a flight barcode to collect checked bag tags at a kiosk, gain entry to the Koru lounge (if a member) and board your aircraft". But I don't know where on the kiosk to scan it. It looks like there are two scaners on the kiosk, one for passports and one for printed bar codes. Maybe the printed bar code will scan the app?

I've just had a read of some reviews of the app and found people complaining about the bar codes disappearing from the latest version. Here's an example:

Bar code gone :( Great app. However, where is the bar code gone to check in at a Kiosk? This has gone from the previous version. Someone else has asked this question and it's not been answered here.

ePass tags used to only be issued to those customers with satatus (ie Koru/Gold/Gold Elite) but when they launched the new Airpoints REV/OneSmart cards a few years ago they included that with the card, so now every Airpoints member has an ePass tag - it's built into your Airpoints card.

You just scan your phone barcode on the normal barcode reader. The passport reader is as it says - for passports.

As for barcodes disappearing you'll find this is typically because they're international flights where online check-in and paperless boarding isn't an option. There were a number of destinations where Air NZ announced it could be used when they launched online check-in, but they've since had to remove them.

I'm travelling from Auckland to Christchurch on Saturday and so I've loaded up the flight in the Air NZ app. On the front screen of the app there's a Boarding Pass button and when tapped it shows a large code (not a QR code but something similar). I'll try scanning it with the kiosk on Saturday.

All I do is scan the code from my phone to the machine (hold the phone face up under the reader on the lower right of the screen). Then answer the 3 or so questions (more if you are checking bags). It prints a bag tag (if checking bags) and your boarding pass(es). Piece of cake.

I have never just bowled up to the airport and scanned my phone at the gate - I always thought you needed a boarding pass?
