I get it, sort of, that people are jumping on the bandwagon and selling phones with flappy bird on them. But am I missing a trick here that the phone would have to come with the account still on it as well? I can sort of get that the androids could back up the apk/find a dodgy one on the internet and sideload it, but iphones are advertised as coming with it too and that is all tied to your apple ID?! What am I missing here, are people dumb enough to give away their apple/google accounts with all the purchase history, details and paid for apps?

It is possible to sideload it onto iPhones as well using the iPhone Configuration Utility, not sure if it'll stay on there once you sync your account with the store though.

It's not like there aren't plenty of clones of it around anyway.

Anyone stupid enough to pay over the odds for a device with this game on it probably deserves to be bilked.

Some dude was trying to sell one on facebook. Called him out and liking a tutorial on how to do it. He denied it in everyway, Next hour the listing was gone lol.

For $50K I would consider selling my iTunes account to be an entirely intelligent decision.

Also one possible method is using an Apple developer certificate to load up some phones with copies. Violates T&C's of course. But really there are any number of methods and who knows what condition those phones are in.

The part I cannot believe is the sale prices being quoted.

Adding to all that some enterprising pirate has made it free to play online with advertising of course ; ).

nobody was actually selling phones for those prices.

They were listing them and there were joke bids, but nobody was actually paying.

Went to Trademe and searched for Flappy Bird and iPhone and it came back with 4 pages of results! Impressive to say the least...

Just to be clear here, I am not talking about the original auctions, joke bids etc that kicked this off. I am talking about the fact that I can do a trademe search for flappy bird and pick up a device with flappy bird installed for not too much more than a regular phone would cost. Like these guys:
iPhone 4s - $650
Galaxy S4 - $659
iPhone 3GS - $170

There are also a few jokers/dreamers like these guys:
iPhone 5 - $1900
Galaxy Young - $2500

There are hundreds of them on all different phones and I doubt they all have tricky things like Apple Dev accounts or downloaded it when it was still available on a throwaway account because they knew there would be a price spike.

I heard that people were trying this on eBay but that eBay had removed all the auctions because their terms state that selling copyrightable material (like an app) without permission from the creator (Dong Nguyen in this case) isn't allowed.

Do Trade Me not have a similar rule?

Phones with apps are sold every day so I expect it might be more complex than that. There's a rumor that Nintendo claimed copyright on some of the artwork. That would explain a lot. [Edit: Nintendo is denying this rumor]

Well the reason eBay gave for pulling the auctions was:

Smartphones and tablets must be restored to factory settings before they are allowed to be sold on eBay. Please remove all content from your device, including the game Flappy Bird, before you attempt to list your item again. Please be sure your current and future listings follow these guidelines, keeping in mind that additional violations of this policy could result in the suspension of your account.

I don't know if Trade Me as a similar condition. I found this news story at http://news.cnet.com/8301-17938_105-57618745-1/you-cant-actually-sell-your-flappy-bird-phone-on-ebay/ but lots of other news sites were carrying it.
