Am heading to Sydney in two weeks for a week of holiday. Recommendations of things for me and the better half to do while we're there... GO! :)

Try heading down to eat a nice lunch in the sun at the base of the Opera House...but be careful of the seagulls - they're super agrgressive and will go for your plate if they think you're not looking.

Also - Darling Harbour. Lots to see and do and eat there.

Take a nice walk in Hyde Park. really explore it and take your time. Sit for a while in the morning and watch the flocks of Cockatoos. Fascinating.

Take a ferry across to The Sydney Taronga Zoo, on a nice calm day its a great way of seeing Sydney Harbour.

Common sense is not as common as you think.

I second that suggestion. When we lived in Sydney (late 90's), one of our favourite trips to do when friends and family came over was to take a ferry from Circular Quay to Watsons Bay. Hopefully the Watsons Bay Hotel is still there, with its garden bar, so you can spend the afternoon chucking back quiet ones while looking down the barrel of Sydney Harbour. And when you get the munchies, you can have some mighty fine fish and chips from Doyles.

Disclaimer: We've not been to Sydney since 2004, so my cunning plan hinges on both those establishments still being around, and with food, drink and service at an acceptable level :-)

They'd both been there as long as I can remember (I first went to the pub in the late 80's) and with the popularity of they place, I hope they haven't gone anywhere!

Darling Harbour is brilliant, one of my favourite places in the world.
I've gone to shows, toured the Opera house, gone on the submarine, eaten, drunk and even taken in an international car show around there.
Heck, even the Chinese Gardens were a good way to spend a few hours.
The Bridge Climb was 'okay' for me, the visit to Luna Park was more fun though!
I've down a paddle boat dinner thing a couple of times too, a great way to spend an evening.
I'd like to day trip to the Blue Mountains next time, but, the time often gets sucked up quickly by the over half and her desire to visit the many, many shops in the CBD.

the visit to Luna Park was more fun though!

ooooo yes!!! Luna Park is awesome! I love the fast Jetboat that shoots around the harbour too.

Edit: And if you like beaches don't go to Bondi like everyone but instead shoot down to Coogee Beach instead. It is the next bay over from Bondi but no where near as busy and yet the beach is just nice. Great bars and restaurants too

+1; the Blue Mountains are a great area, and the inclined railway at Scenic World is fun - try to get to the front of the front car...

Walk across the bridge (pedestrain path, not over the top <BG>), to North Sydney (Milsons Point) then wander either to the right (Kirribilli) or to the left (Lavender Bay) ... both offer great views, nice walks and heaps of cafes and restaurants.

Don't forget brunch and people watching at The Rocks.

DON'T drive anywhere. Especially during school rush hours! Lots of 25kph or 35kph (forget which) speed cameras, bad roads and traffic, trips take forever. Parking is expensive too - especially in city. Better off with a transit pass.

Things to do - Into the city and circular key, the rocks, darling harbour, paddys markets - you can ride the monorail between these (but its not part of transit pass). Ferry to Manly beach. Watsons Bay (as above). Maybe ferry to paramata and do a mall when you're there if L wants to go shopping. Bondi beach worth a trip, another shopping option at the Bondi Junction too.

Heading over myself to see Dave Matthews Band in a couple weeks so keep the suggestions coming, might try Watsons Bay. Katoomba and the blue mountains is fantastic, worth a nights stay so you can see plenty.
