Looking for advice for someone travelling to the USA. They are after a Data only SIM, as thats all they need on their phone.

T-Mobile seems to have a Data plan thats $30 for 3gb for 30 days. However i know the USA mobile industry can be complicated and more difficult than here, full of compulsory contracts and locked down devices and services.

So, can you walk into a shop in LA for example as a tourist and buy a sim card? Anything that should be known about?

My last trip to the US I simply went to T-Mobile shop and got a SIM on pre-pay plan ... I already had a phone from a previous trip.

Over there they often lock both phones and SIM cards (particularly on the cheapie deals), so check that your phone can handle their SIMs and GSM bands.

R.

I have bought a redpocket Sim off trademe for a trip in April. I can't rate it yet as have yet to go. It uses AT and T which should have better coverage than t mobile (according to rumors anyway)

Cheers Matt.

My views (except when I am looking out their windows) are not those of my employer.
