Hi There!

We had a strange call just now apparently from the Chamber of Commerce. One of the things they asked my office manager is if we had managed to find new office space, something very few people would know we were looking for. I am wondering how they could know that.

I called back and asked to speak to the person who had called but they had no record of it. Someone is investigating.

Anyone have any ideas what this could all be about?

Not many, and I wouldn't expect to see them on here and even if they did, how would they be able to identify my nick here with the name of a company etc. Would take a lot of work.

Nickname -> Profile ->Name -> Linked In -> Company Name?

Just guessing. Its likely they found out through other methods tho. Have found the Chambers of Commerce to be very sneaky - almost freemason like laughing

Yes, for a geek, I'd imagine that to be true (I am not hiding it). For your average Commerce member I'd expect it to be harder. I don't think it came from here, but I intend to find out.

I am actually more worried it wasn't them, since we called back to ask to speak to the person and they don't know who called me.

What if it is not the average Commerce member but a scammer?

As you should.

Maybe not quite a scammer but a real estate person being nosey without declaring their interest. Did you call back based on who they claimed to be or CLI?

Yah it could be, though it would be fairly nefarious to make a claim to be with the Chamber of Commerce I would think. We don't have CLI.

Got a call from Chamber of Commerce saying they are aware there are calls going out pretending to be them. They are investigating what options are available to them. Apparently they have asked the other people if they have found new offices too, so seems a precursor to getting contact details, namely primarily email addresses.

I've had several of these calls over the last month or so.  They all ask if we're still looking for new office space.  After the first three calls my business partner rang the Chamber of Commerce and they knew nothing about it.  If you play along and say yes you've now found new offices, like I did yesterday, then they start asking for lots of details (when are you moving, how many people, contact details, etc).  I ended up hanging up on them.

Scammers I'd say. Trying to find a place to snatch some laptops in the confusion of moving.

Well I got an interesting call from RBL Commercial Moving today saying they knew we were moving and when I asked how they came to know that, with some hesitation mentioned they had a company in Canada who got leads for them. I asked if they had cold called us recently pretending to be the Chamber of Commerce and he said he hoped they were more sophisticated than that. Seems co-incidental to me.

It does make you wonder. If the caller had been open about their reason for calling and you didn't have transport arranged you may have been interested. They don't follow up leads very quickly though.

I recall a bogus survey that led to a call from an insurance company that claimed I'd requested a call from them. When pressed the insurance co claimed that the agent lining up leads invented the survey idea without company approval.

Well if the they got my number didn't put me off, the minimum $1000 sure did.
