I love looking at old pictures of Wellington. Was born 1990 so missed all the olden day stuff, trams etc. Love looking at the roads which are less populated and the buildings are so much smaller.

While we are talking about history and I do apologise if this is going off topic but..

Does anybody know a website where you can enter your street name and it gives a history about that street and how it was named? Really interested in how my street name got its name, who is it named after? Where did it come from? etc

*

Check with your local council or try the public libary to see if you can find that local councils meeting minutes where they approved the street name.

Parliament looks better without the hideous Beehive next to it.

Really brilliant that Archives are now making old National Film Unit stuff available ... I've lived in Wellington most of my life (so far) and was 19 in 1966, so those images are a great memory.  Don't remember there being so many Morris Minors and Triumph Heralds on the roads though smile

What the?

They really were trying to get the tourists in weren't they - and they did away with 6 o'clock closing and loosened up the drinking laws too...

Talk about cringe making!!

Did all the Wellingtonians speak like poms then? I arrived 4 years later and hope I didn't speak like that!!

I thought the accents sounded far better than they do now, far better diction and easier to understand. I don't know what has happened to the NZ accent, Christchurches seems to be the worst.

I would have been great if the films had been published on youtube in HD. As they were done on film I imagine they could get better copies off them. It was amazing to see Wellington without the motorway, it was like a small town, and that wasn't really that long ago. The 80's really changed Wellington.
