But, if you google, spell it Hanmer!

Have stayed here http://www.glenalvon.com/ a couple of times.
Nice and tidy, with pretty big rooms opposite the pools.

Pretty sure there are few rental places up there although during December prices will go up and you probably needed to book 4 months ago....

I find all my accommodation using Trip Advisor and generally book using Expedia or direct with the hotel. I've done that with a variety of places (a few places in Thailand, Fiji, Samoa, airlines) and never had a problem. I tend to confirm anything I book with a booking site with the hotel, just in case, but no problems so far.

Check out Hanmer Holiday Homes if you want a whole house and comfort. I highly recommend their services and the selection of houses available.

Yep, +1 for HHH.  I've used these guys multiple times (probably 10+ times over the years) and always found the process easy with a range of options available.

Theres plenty of holiday homes in the area and some are fantastic, be aware that some are distinctly downhill from the pools and township, whilst others are definitely uphill!

The trick to the spelling the name (with a bonus place name included!)...:
"Theres no ham in Hanmer, and no sun in Sumner."

Also, spell it right when you're there. You'll piss the locals off otherwise. ;-)

The Heritage is worth the price, if you're looking to treat a certain someone.

I really like to use AirBNB when traveling. You can rent a whole house/apartment or a room. Good to live with locals that know the area I find, so like to rent a room in someones house and be social when on vacation.

Social?! *shudder*!

I'd spend the whole time in my room terrified to come out I suspect.
