Hey guys.

If you haven't heard there is a group called "Lizard Squad" which has DDosed some pretty big sites recently, Sony (PSN), the Vatican and some others. They have now (Allegedly) taken down Twitch. I had 5-10 minutes to kill and thought I would watch some streams but not now.

My question is why do people do this? Just for attention? Do they get paid something or Is it just for notoriety? Why cant they be located based off the tweets they send. Why is it so "easy" to do this and to some pretty big companies also. That doesn't make me feel safe when inputting my bank details online etc.

Its pretty bloody annoying.

And for some people streaming online is their only way of making an income so they are taking that away from them.

Sometimes it is ideological - they want to cause financial loss to large companies that they have some sort of agenda against. Sometimes just for the 'thrill' of doing it, to say they did.

Be aware there is a massive difference between a DDoS attack, and an actual security breach, in terms of security of your information. DDoS is purely a denial of service, not accessing any secure information. Think of it as the difference between having a couple of big blokes stand outside the door of the bank and stop you walking in, as compared to them going inside armed and demanding money.

these people arent really hackers just script kiddies, anyone with a credit card can make or rent a botnet.

True, though DDoS attacks can be used to mask or screen more nefarious undertakings.

In this case though, I suspect this is pretty much the case:

Yeah given the targets it is just a bunch of a**holes doing what they do, being a**holes.

They hit battle.net pretty hard last weekend too - 40 minute wait times for hearthstone and d3.

Every gaming community i take part in, has had their run with it..

Think back a few years ago, it was WAY less common...
