Hi guys,

A Harvey Norman ad caught my eye yesterday because they're advertising a 60 day no-questions-asks money back guarantee on all Electric Shavers. The reason this appeals to me is that I have really heavy/coarse facial hair so it's really hard trying to find a shaver that can do me justice, and because personal care items are not usually returnable once they've been used

Does anyone have any recommendations as to which shaver to try? I'm particularly interested in hearing from those with a heavy beard. I'm currently looking at the Philips Sensotouch 3D. It has good reviews and I don't mind the high price if it can be justified.

Shavers hurt. I grew a beard instead :-)

I have noticed tho' that an Australian shaver company has just opened up in the Lower Hutt Queensgate. I expect that will put some price pressure into the local market. But if you're in Wellington check out Moore Wilsons before anywhere else. They have a great product range and their mark up is generally on ~2%.

I bought my first electric shaver after using standard razors for about 20 years and so far I've been pretty impressed. After reading lots of reviews I got the Braun Cooltec, the cooling bar is quite nice on the skin and I find I don't get as much redness as I did when using razors. I have pretty rough stubble and it's definitely slower with an electric shaver, I also find I have to touch up a few trickier to reach bits with a razor. When I bought mine they weren't selling the Cooltec in NZ yet but I see that they're selling them at Harvey Norman now.

Edit: I forgot to mention try to get one that does both wet and dry, I find shaving in the shower to be much easier and much better for my skin.

If you're anywhere near a Moore Wilsons. They often have Philips gear at far better prices than the big-name retail chains, even if the latter are running a special.

Sometimes I use big words I don't always fully understand in an effort to make myself sound more photosynthesis.

I started using one of these Panasonic wet battery shavers out of curiosity this year.

$59 on special at the moment - this is just the cheap model - they make some fancier models as well - up to $300-$400 if you want the top model. Presumably they are even better.

I have found it pretty good - used to find blades a bit harsh on my skin and I seem to have a hard stubble.
It does take a couple of weeks for your skin and beard to get used to it - it seems to shave closer over that time.

The mrs thinks it seems smooth enough.

I use king of shaves Gel (supermarkets sell it) - that seems a good combo.

Just flush the tap through it at the end to clean up.

I have used a $99 Philips 4401 since I was 14 and its pretty good - still going strong after 12 years and I have only replaced the heads once.

You will always get a closer shave with a foil shaver though if you have curly hair, you can get ingrown which are a pain.
The closest shaver which I think is almost as close as a razor I have found is a $14 foil rechargable travel shaver from Jaycar. I use that one for fancy occasions because I get ingrowns a few days later as its so close.

I do buy a new shaver every second year but I always seem to go back to using the 4401.

I keep a PT750 in the car and use that every second day. Seems to last a couple of weeks between recharges.

I've had bad luck with foil shavers... every one I've used has caused skin irritation. Rotary shavers are fine.
