Hi all,

After thoughts/experiences/reviews of the various Milford Sound bus/cruise daytrip tour companies/offerings, leaving from and returning to Queenstown.

  • Been on a good one?
  • Been on a bad one?
  • What did you get out of it?
  • Too crowded?
  • Too commercial?
  • Loved every minute of it?

Please, come share with the group wink

Milford is pretty touristy. I preferred to go on the tour across lake Manapouri and into Doubtful Sound instead (or as well!)

Long drive from Queenstown and return. I did a flight to Miolford it was great but guessing it would be quite expensive but you see so much more than on the boats.

Manapouri is beautiful and the trip over to West arm great.

Hi ,

I have done the Milford Sound cruise many times and suggest

Stay the night in Te Anau
Do the glow worm caves on the day you arrive at Te Anau.  Its a great experience as they ferry you across lake
and guides take you down to the underground caves.  You climb aboard a rectangular metal 'tub' and the guide uses
ropes to haul the tub across in pitch darkness to the glow worm grotto.

we booked with Real Journeys so got a discount for the glow worms and also the cruise
I dont know if this is on offer now,

Depart early morning to Milford, its such a scenic drive and allow 90 mins for photo stops etc
Take the early morning cruise ( about 9am) as the boats get more crowded as  bus loads arrive later in the morning for the mid day cruise.
Drive back to  Te Anau for lunch and then head into Queenstown or where ever you plan to go

cheers

BBQ Bus

We did that one in 2012, was excellent imo. The driver was funny and a good speaker, group size was small which we liked. Relaxed operation not too commercial.

If you're into diving, go scuba there, the mix of fresh & salt water makes it amazing

I've sent many clients on these trips.

My vote would be overnight on Doubtful.

Avoid Milford.

Well 2 years later, how is the scene nowadays?

Can you camp/park a campervan anywhere in Milford Sounds itself?

Or is the closest you can get Te Anau?

Anyone taken a cruise in Milford lately?

Any particular company you'd recommend over any other etc?

Unfortunately I won't have the time for a Doubtful Sound overnight.
