Does anyone know the ins and outs of importing cigars? The duty on them is $680 per kilo of tobacco content, but I'm curious as to how they actually determine the weight. I presume they don't include the box, but then you don't want customs agents removing all the cigars to weigh them either, especially if they're not wrapped...

They'd usually charge on the 'net' weight ie. less the weight of the box.

Is this import pre-packaged (with net weight marked on the box) or have you boxed loose product?

It's a pre-packaged box but I have no idea whether net weight is a standard label for cigar boxes. You'd hope so but...

I've reached out to Customs and will report back what they say.

In case anyone's interested, I got this reply from customs after a week -

I am advised by the staff at the mail centre in Auckland that cigars are weighed out of the box as the declared weight on the box is normally the gross weight including the box and packaging.

Doesn't sound ideal to me but I guess that assures you're only taxed on what you have to be.
