So. I have a bank account at ASB which my wife didn't know about. We bank at ASB anyway but I am saving for a surprise trip for our 10th anniversary and didn't want her to know.

Thus 18 months ago when I opened the Account I disabled paper statements so she wouldn't see them in the post.

Imagine the horror on my face when she does the post at the weekend and comes in holding a paper statement for an account she's not supposed to know about wanting to know all about it.

WTF ASB !?? Why have you randomly over ridden my instructions not to send paper statements?!

Surprise now ruined.

Tell her you're saving up for a breast enlargement for her.

That would be something she didn't need!

I'm pretty sure your regular paper statements are different from your initial opening statement.  You probably won't receive any more.

I would have put down a fake or old address.

But that is the odd thing - no paper statement has ever been issued in 19 months until that one, which covers last month only!

Hi there, sorry to hear this - it doesn't sound like things have gone right at our end for some reason! Would you be able to send us a private message with your name and contact details so we can look into what has happened here? Our sincere apologies for ruining the surprise with your wife - looks like there are some gremlins in the system so we need to hunt them down. Thanks  ^SM

I caught this a few weeks ago (also banking with ASB) - a number of my accounts and somehow slipped back to paper statements...I happened to see it before anything came through and set them back to no statements; can't really say anything asides from reaffirming you are not going nuts or being assaulted by spirits from another dimension :)

I think ASB should be throwing in at least $1000 for being a good customer and as an apology. It will also help you with your surprise.

I take it you weren't able to quickly come up with an excuse like its your kiwisaver account or investment fund from 20 years ago.

Not as bad as me going to the lawyer to sort out property matters and specifically explaining to not send out a paper invoice for the services only to have it arrive in the mail 2 weeks later and being questioned about it.

Suffice to say I never returned to them

Have had the 'no contact' rule broken for surprises on a couple of occasions from a retailer and a travel agent.  Thankfully in both cases I only gave my cell number and work address, appreciating that hiccups happen occasionally.

Lazy is such an ugly word, I prefer to call it selective participation
