Southern Cross Pet Insurance is good. Have been with them for nearly two years. Formally, it was Ellenco, and later acquired by Southern Cross.

I have warehouse petplan for my two cats (never had to claim), and my cow-orker has it for his dog (and has claimed many, many times), has worked out for both of us without issue so far.

I really wonder if it is worth it for some animals, especially young healthy  ones. Eg if you have cats and they are inside all the time, then the risk is quite low. When we used to have cats outside, they used to get into fights, and get abysses which needed doing to the vet. at about $400 per abysses. They would have been uninsurancable due to the number of times we had to go. But when they are kept inside, they don't have any problems. It is often when the pet is older, when it encounters more serious problems.

when we got our first dog we didnt get insurance and just took the hit when it came to the vets. He has been healthy and vet free for the first 5 years of his life but this year he has costed us thousands and thousands already and he has a on going condition.

we purchased another dog for some extra companionship for him but would like to get insurance for her if anything would happen

Ellenco was better. We just managed to get our Springer Spaniel on an Ellenco policy in August but they are no longer available so our newest dog (of 3) had to go on a Southern Cross one and the policy terms are less generous.

I've seen Petnsur. I too been looking to get pet insurance for our three huskies - especially we race in dryland sled dog racing. May look at SX Pet Insurance then.

FYI: There's an existing topic regarding Pet Insurance.

Plus one for Southern Cross Pet Insurance.

We put our cat Hazel on one of the Ellenco plans and havn't had a problem with them or their policy.  We havn't made a claim yet.  We live in the bush with a lot of wild cats and our cat loves climbing trees too.  If anything happens, we are covered up to $12,000 dollars.  If you are spending more than $12,000 dollars on an animal at a vet, you should most likely re-consider the option of putting it down.

$12,000 on a dog however won't get you very far for advanced over-night medical care, oxygen, drugs, operations and recovery.  You can blow through that in a night!

I HIGHLY recommend insuring your pet, no matter what it is.  If your cat or dog swallows something and it gets stuck, you're looking at $3,000+ dollars just to get it scoped.

I have an Ellenco policy for one of my dogs and South Cross Pet care for the other. Depending on the breed of dog some dogs especially larger dogs are more susceptible to joint issues and diseases.

I would do some research on your breed of dog as that will help when it comes to selecting coverage.

One of our neighbours has a Beagle.

A while ago, she leaped out of their pickup truck and messed up her back.

She ended up in Massey at the vet hospital there and the bill was $16,000...!

That's pretty cheap for a back injury.

My partner worked at AEC (Animal Emergency Care) on the Unitech campus in Mt. Albert.  If it was treated there, it would be twice that!  VSG work out of the same building and do all the aqua therapy for k9's with bad backs.  The aftermath costs the same as the operation and drugs.  There were people that regularly spent 100+ thousand on their animals to get them back to normal again.  Rich people of course.

Ellenco for my cat (he is 10 or 11 now) so far had 2 claims which worked out to about the same amount I have paid to them over the last few years.

Would not do without it now, makes like a lot easier when you know you will get the money back and not worry about blowing the budget or making a hard choice because of $$$

You'd think most people would go for it right?  I tried convincing the new owners of a German Shepard to get pet insurence.  They refused saying the idea was stupid.  Roughly three months later, the pup was hit by a car due to their own negligence and couldn't afford the $9,000 dollar hip and leg operation to repair him, let alone the $250 dollars to put him down.  It makes me so mad....

Taking an animal in to your care should not be as easy as it is right now.  Too many abusive negligent owners with hardly enough money to feed their animal, let alone fix it.
