I really like contactless payment, like most people I wish NZ Banks had implemented a more elegant solution than sticking a card to your phone but that's all we have at the moment so for anyone interested who doesn't want to "uglify" their phone / case with a stick on ASB PayTag here is what I have done with mine.

I have an iPhone 6, I got it on launch day and the only case I could find was the Incipio dual pro. It has a layer of silicon and then a layer of a hard outer shell on top. I thought it would be a good interim case but I liked it so much I still use it.

I cut a hole in the inner rubber bit the size of the PayTag, then inserted the PayTag which is almost exactly the same thickness as the inner rubber. No need to stick it to your phone, I just put the outer shell on which hold's it firmly in place.

I've been out using it the last couple of days and it works great. No issues.

Excellent - been pondering doing similar with my case, but haven't got to it yet!

If they fit, they work fine just sitting between the case and the phone (don't need to stick them to anything).

My one fits inside my Galaxy S5's cover, tag stuck to my battery. Only makes a slight bulge.

I just stuck it on my cover.

The amount of people I've snapped out by paying for things with it is quite amazing.

I do live in small town Napier though...

Don't like the idea of it personally. How long does it take to swipe/insert a card and use a PIN really? Usually done while the checkout person is putting the thing into a bag. Feel happier knowing that if my wallet/card gets stolen someone still needs the PIN to be able to use it. I know it's limited to $80 and all that but a person could make a lot of $80 purchases before you notice it's missing and have the card stopped. And I assume it's a nightmare to try and prove it wasn't you using the card too.

I did the same with my ASB paytag when I first got it. Didn't like the idea of cutting in to my case though and it did create a bit of a bulge... when I put my phone down on a table it would end up sliding around because it wasn't fully flat. Just ended up using Semble instead :p

Semble looks interesting - seems not to be available til 2015 except for a lucky few trial members?

Yeah it's closed trial at the moment but will be launching next year.

It would be great if I could

1. Enforce a lower limit

2. Enforce PIN for all transactions.

You can turn it on and off with the mobile app or online -  just treat it as you would your credit card.

Why would you need to enforce a pin or lower transaction value?

Bought a coffee this morning - just means I don't have to carry my bank cards with me.

I used to have my credit card sitting in my case anyway - so no real difference.

In answer to this, I ask my own question to you: Why do they require PIN above $80?

Audiophiles are such twits! They buy such pointless stuff: Gold plated cables, $2000 power cords. Idiots.

For the sake of maybe 5 seconds a pin provides more security as opposed to anyone being able to pick it up and use it.

As far as I understand, it is at the bank's risk not the cardholder.  As for proving it was not you I'd guess that:

  1. If it is one or two transactions, there would not be much of a fight about it - not worth the bad publicity for the bank;
  2. If it is dozens of transactions, banks are pretty good at working it out before you know the card is gone - had a mate who was informed his wallet had probably been stolen after his card was used in quick succession at a petrol station, 3-4 liquor stores, and then (from memory) a few strip clubs.  He was surprised they noticed a difference from normal patterns, but there you go;
  3. In any case, there wouldn't be many places today without some form of CCTV covering tills - so proof you were/weren't there would not be that difficult if a real fight developed.

I was specifically meaning lower than $80.

I think $80 is appropriate as it is high enough to cater for a large percentage of transactions (particularly regularly occurring ones) - while at the same time preventing someone from immediately hammering your card if it is nicked.

Obviously nothing to stop them buying $79 + $79 + $79 etc - but that would look a little bit suss at the checkout.

I have found they don't stick to cases, they just fall off. So have mine between the phone and the case. Haven't tried it out though, as I don't often carry my phone with me.
