Isnt it facinating that the Government can pass laws making email and text spamming illegal but they can stop telemarketer calling you late at night. Bad enough when they are NZ'ers now we get overseas with shocking english and dont know what time zone we are in. Grrrr

I got one from Slingshot (not exactly sure where the call center was based) but they where trying to sell me a tolls and broadband package, so I had a little fun with them and led them on a little, untill finally they gave up Cool.

They had a funny caller id number too, '90222'...

What about the recorded message with north american accent going on about the government helping people get into their own homes (or whatever)?  We got that after ten one night.  Is that about our government, or what?  We've had it several times over the last few months...

solution to fax spam (if you have their return number)

get 2 black pieces of A4 paper and tape one end to the other and feed it into the fax. Once its loaded, tape the other ends together to create a loop... you can guess the rest.

If it's a New Zealand address Mr Boss puts the fax into an A4 envelope, and sends it back to the originator Without Postage

When they ring to complain he says they pay one of those companies to send their junk fax, so they can pay to remove our name.

I am threatening to just tell the next one who rings (to complain about having their fax sent back) that a ream of paper should make up for the expense we have to go through to recieve their fax!!!  (Haven't had the guts to, tho')

Or use a "gasp" modem to connect to the fax people or the idiots that use them, Some of the commands used can totally cripple the other ends modems and put the remote fax machine in some interesting states.

The other "payback time" one is to dial an 0800 number and setup two old mobile phones dialling it alternatley... (I used two 5110's and a PicAXE) to dial the 0800 repeatedly, wait till they get that phone bill in the mail!

Paradoxsm - That would only be good if the phones also left a recorded message saying I hate spam, wouldn't it?  I wouldn't want to do that, it almost seems mean?

About 1 month ago I had a call from an assistant for a local real estate agent. She identified the agent but I forget the name now. I got annoyed as this was dinner time.

So I took 10 minutes to track down the agents home phone number and then called her and asked if she needed her computer fixed as that is what I did - Not really what I do but it was relevant to her
She asked me why I was calling and I explained that since her assistant called me and my family during dinner I was returning the favour. She laughed and commented she took the point.

All the while my wife was sort of freaking that I would do such a thing.

Quite amusing in the end. The moral of this story is this geek generally knows how to track down and provide Feedback. Not as effective as the never-ending fax (Tape 2-3 pages together and as the first page comes through tape the start to the end forming a fax belt. (I got off one marketing companies mailing list this way)

We get a lot of spam faxes at work - Dell is by far the worst - the keep faxing us, even after we've requested multiple times to be taken off their list.

One idea I've had is to put our fax on a timer, so faxes can only come through during business hours.  Most of the spam faxes come through at odd hours, so if the fax is off, problem solved.
