Hey so I wanted to go up south island for a week, I have mostly travel around north island in my car.. I was told by a friend you can grab flights as cheap as a hundred bucks (lol) or less sometimes and just fly to wellington - dunedin - christchurch ? I looked up flight center and the prices were $500+one way... might as well take my car then as I will have a means to transport, camp around or even sleep in it if needed.

could anybody walk me through the flights or whatever it is, how are most backpackers doing it on their limited funds? I cant imagine they take thousands of dollars of tickets just to travel around NZ? just curious..

Keep an eye on http://grabaseat.co.nz/. Air NZ run regular specials on there. You can usually pick up a one way ticket AK - CH for $49 (baggage not included).

Grabaseat had tickets Auckland/Christchurch $29 the other day. If you can plan ahead look into Grabaseat. If you have a smart phone and download the app, you can set up specific destinations and get an alert when specials come up.
I use it all the time to Taupo from Auckland and have never paid over $45

if you are flying anyhere but christchurch in the SI expect to pay more, queenstown and dunedin are a bit dearer, and its cheaper to fly to queenstown and drive to invercargill including hiring a car than it is to fly.

Exactly what my wife & daughter chose to do to save $$$ late last year, when they needed to go to Invercargill. Made a short holiday of it flying Auckland to Queenstown. Hiring a car and driving to Invercargill then on to Dunedin. Finally flying Dunedin back to Auckland. And saved a few $$$ in the process!

It can pay to look at the possibility including a rental car in the travel process where possible.

Jetstar is cheap because they can't fill planes otherwise.

The fact Jetstar can sell same day flights for $99 Wellington to Auckland while Air NZ can get $299 for the identical product may be good for a consumer, but ultimately shows a failed business model when you're having to sell your product for 1/3 of the price of the competition.

Jetstar only want to cherry pick main trunk routes, and have pretty much shelved deploying Q400's on regional routes simply because the numbers don't stack up.
