I had someone purchase something from me via trademe, and I though it all looked legit. But I was contacted a few days after the auction to say that their account had been hacked and to void the purchase. I am not sure if this is legit or not, but it is a pain to have to now wait for 5-7 days to then manually apply for a refund, and relist it.  Just wondering if this is common, and what people do about it. Should the person who purchased it sort it out with trademe?  It is the first time I have come across it, and I have done about 150 trades.

If they haven't paid then probably better to cut your losses and apply for the fees to be reversed.
I think most of the time "hacked" means someone else in my family jumped on my PC and I have no security.

It's just an excuse to dishonor the trade or someone else use the account to bid the item for fun.

Why would a hacker, hacked into the account and bid the item? It's not like the hacker will gain anything.

That's what I think. The trader is a newish one, and already has a number of negative reviews. Problem is that trademes system won't let me apply for a refund of the fees for nearly a week, and I will probably forget unless I setup a reminder.

Report them to trademe and they will push things along a lot faster.

Had similar thing happen

Yep the wife got one of these faked trademe emails yesterday and promptly asked me why I was buying BBQ's when we had a perfectly good one. It looked like it was all designed to get you to follow a link for a standard drive-by hacking attempt. The email appeared to have some poor persons real details on it.

I'm a trader of around 2000 feedbacks. Only have 2 neutrals. One was for not giving good enough feedback, the other as buyer just looked at photos and bought without reading description.

It would be a lot worse situation if I slammed all the people who deserved it for not completing trades, which actually is quite frequent.

Last case someone bought a phone with no intention of completing trade. Success fees were refunded immediately after the 3 day initial waiting period for contact. I put the phone back on trademe and it sold, to the sister of initial buyer, whoalso never completed the trade. But that time I had to wait 3 days to request refund and 5 more for person to reply (or not) to trademe.

Not sure why it's hit and miss and why not always trademe places comment on feedback along lines of "was seller in auction but trade not completed"?

If I give the duo bad feedback I'll get it back myself and only hope I guess to get it removed is when their accounts are closed which might not be that far off.

you give them back feedback on the final minute of the 45th day. after that feedback closes. i had that done to me by a bully trader once.

Trade Me told me if one receives bad feedback they won't deal with it as it's "between the users".

I had one person who bought something from me ten years ago and kept me waiting. The first email asked if I'd accept payment in instalments. The next ones they said payment was made but I never saw any money. When I posted a feedback saying transactions was never completed I received a bad feedback (the only one in my account) from them.

Obviously it looks bad if people don't bother reading the actual story and just look on the smiley/angry faces.

I had a couple of negative feedbacks for stupid reasons (on their side not mine) - they got removed when TM changed their policy about feedbacks from users who had their accounts disabled :) So back to 100% I went.

In your case, Id probably just give them a neutral.

The 45 days don't seem exact.

I was trying to automate the leaving of negatives and blacklisting of non completes and was finding the form not working about 50% of the time 44 days 11 hours 55 mins after the buy now occurred. Took it back to 44 days 10 hours and much greater success. This was pre api when I was just doing wget scrapes.

to a degree, to a human, a neutral is as bad as a bad feedback. so either give good, bad, or don't is my suggestion

The scam here is they use hacked trademe accounts to pay for goods with accounts they've got via Phishing attacks, By the time the bank have reversed the money you've already sent the goods and are out of pocket
