My last live match was about 12 years ago ...

Somehow the kids are not interfering so I get to watch today!

Educating myself on the complex strategies and terminologies today.

So the fast bowler swung everywhere, baited Warner with a few boundaries and sixes, and then bowled one with no swing and tricked Finch. Is that what happened? Or is it random luck

I wonder if we actually have any spinners today ... or issit lots of fast bowlers vs Australia?

Could be wrong but I think boult southee and vittori are all spin bowlers. It looked pretty mild spin tho, about 300mm worth of lateral movement

Spin bowlers don't tend to smoke the ball down at 140+km/h. Southee and Boult are pace or swing bowlers. Hats off to Shane Bond for his development of this attack.

While it is often a tactic to feed a guy a couple of juicy ones and then bowl one in an area he has problems with, I don't think that was the case with Southee yesterday - he basically bowled an assortment of old cobblers with the odd good ball thrown in.

Boult on the other hand was magnificent and Vettori, when he's fit, is still the master of disguise and variation.

There was a ton of screaming going on at my house yesterday, thank goodness we won :)

However the rest of the tournament goes this version of the New Zealand team is one of the most entertaining and tough teams I've seen.

boult and southee are fast bowlers.
we don't have a "real" spin bowler. vettori calls himself a spin bowler but he actually can't spin it properly, but is sometimes effective doing what he does.
maybe he should be called a medium bowler though he's not quite a medium

it was the most entertaining cricket i've ever watched. because it didn't last like 10 hours or something ... otherwise i usually look look look look get a drink - wicket falls - lots of swearing

very very brave hit for six by kane williamson. he had the ability, he backed himself and got it right. [if he mistimed it a catcher was right there on the path of the ball]

no idea what the two hackers were doing. all they (the 2 fellas who can't bat) needed to do was to block, maybe get a single for kane to go on strike, and they all swung and missed and got out. *&^%

Amazing match. The aussies blamed it on their woeful batting. But, both teams had great bowlers, and on that day, top bowling was better then top batting, so a low scoring match. I feel we will learn more then them, should we meet in the final. It seems both teams are close to equal, bit O bad luck or good luck would win a match. The key I feel is how they handle whats between the ears. Implode under pressure or push on doggedly.

Hopefully what he did to Johnsons ego is worse than he did to his arm ;p

I think you summed up the game very well. Be interesting to see which team learnt the most from the game. Think we can put to bed the 'CChockers ' label.

One more thing to add is we've played really well recently but they were all at home ... The MCG might be tricky ... Very much rooting for them still however

I don't think you quite understand the idea of spin bowling. you're probably thinking of the likes of Shane Warne, who turned the ball seemingly at right angles off the pitch. He bowled wrist spin, specifically leg spin bowling. Wrist spin will invoke lots of turn off the pitch but often that's the main aim - a finger spinner like Vettori tends to work more through deceiving the batsman with the flight of the ball through the air...at times, yes, it will turn off the ground too, but the real art of the finger spinner is in controlling the angle, drift (i.e. swing) and length of the ball through the air.

ah i see. no i don't understand much about cricket. the terms fine gulley slip cover etc all have no meaning to me. tried google many times too.

i do now understand most spins as the term but not the application.

these terms i understand off on leg square yorker beamer full short good ....

i understand all the rules (not necessarily a referee standard)

I am no cricket fan but this WCC has been outstanding fun to watch and yesterday I was screaming at the screen at the squash club along with the 100 other people. People playing were actually asking for updates and when we won play stopped for minute in celebration for some :)
I was glad I played just before.

I was at Eden Park luckily enough and I can say it was easily the best atmosphere at a cricket game I have ever experienced, and I have been to a few. It was on a par with atmosphere at the rugby world cup semi at the same ground against the same opposition 4 years ago. Games like that are why heading along to live sport is the best way to enjoy a game. It is a lottery as to when you will get a cracker like that, but if you are lucky enough it is an experience you will never forget.

The banter from the crowd was so much fun, and to their credit the Aussies took it all very well. I was in the stands just behind where Johnson was fielding and we were giving him a hell of a hard time. Nothing personal or insulting, just letting him know his figures were far from good. There were ironic standing ovations every time he came back down to field after McCullum had spanked him all around the ground and he was smiling away, making the odd gesture and generally playing his part. He was a really good sport and the one time someone took it too far (some idiot threw an empty bottle at him - and missed) the whole crowd turned on the idiot and booed and jeered him mercilessly.

It was a spectacular game of cricket and an incredible atmosphere. An afternoon I will remember for a very long time.
