I seem to be one of those people who lives on the edge of history, but never quite connects with it. For example, when George Harrison was pursued up Haight Street in San Francisco, I was in the adjoining Panhandle Park but only heard about it afterwards. Jimi Hendrix’s brother used to drop by to visit a friend at my household in Seattle, but I never met Jimi, who was in London at the time. When I did get to London, I was nearly bowled over by Princess Margaret and her children at Liverpool Street Station. Apparently protocol prohibits them from moving aside for lesser beings. And now I read that up to $100,000 is being paid for tickets to the last Grateful Dead concert in Chicago. Dare I mention that I once attended a concert of theirs at a small venue in northern California as a guest of Pigpen at no cost at all? However that was my first and last encounter with the group and if you have no idea what any of this is all about, go ask your grandparents.

I once met Prince Philip at a drinks party, where he asked me "And what do you do when you are not here drinking gin?"

Prince Charles was patron of my College so I met him twice in my time there.

Once had a girlfriend who I took up to London as a surprise. She asked me what we were going to do there. I said "go and see the Queen" as a flippant reply.

During the weekend we were walking back to my club down Whitehall when two police outriders shot out of a side road we were about to cross on motorbikes and stopped the traffic. A big burgundy Bentley swept round the corner and paused at the intersection right in front of us. Sitting in the back was Her Majesty with one of her Ladies in Waiting. I waved politely and she smiled and waved back. I turned to Barbara and said "You cannot imagine how many favours I had to call in to arrange that!"

I had backstage passes to U2 in Paris and after the opening act, I went back to see them...turns out they were talking to Michael Stipe of REM...what did i do?

I shouted very loudly, "You're Michael Stipe!", took his photo and ran away.

I managed to get over the embarrassment and hung around back stage to take photos of Bono etc, but didn't shout at anyone else.

I've also bumped into more football players and rock stars than you can shake a stick at while wandering the streets of Chelsea in London in the mid nineties...

I also shared a luggage carousel with Helen Clark at Auckland Airport and once helped Canned Heat (60's supergroup) catch a taxi, but I didn't want to sound like I was boasting. And no, I wasn't a groupie.

I saw Comic Book Guy (Jeff Albertson) from the Simpsons in Molesworth St. yesterday.

Yup, London seems to be a common theme here. I was once waiting at a pedestrian crossing in Soho (I think) and Michael Palin strolled up to wait next to me. I really wanted to say something about being a huge monty python fan, but I always think those sort of people must get exasperated with fans coming up to them, so I just nodded, he nodded back, then the light turned green and we both walked off.

I also bumped into Tom Morello at some pub - I think near old street station - didn't recognize him until a friend said something.

Also ended up eating at some pub near hampstead heath IIRC, and some famous coro street star was sitting at the table next to us (I don't watch it so had no clue who he was - a reasonably young guy) but my Girlfriend at the time was suitably excited.

Hmm... In New Zealand I once found myself making small talk with Anthony Ray Parker at the photocopier in the library. He was photocopying something with his (at the time) young son - it wasn't long after the Matrix was released I think. Also was once sitting near the back at a University comedy gig (I think that's what it was) and an extremely drunk Chris Cairns wandered in right behind me and started heckling.

I saw that bald guy from Close Up in Subway once.

Not quite a brush with fame, but I auditioned for a movie when I was a kid.  In my late teens I decided to see if the movie had ever been made, turns out it was.  It was called 50 ways of Saying Fabulous. The title stuck with me for years and decided to "Google it" one evening and aquired it via the internet.  I can't express how glad I am that I never got the part.

I'm pretty sure (after watching the movie) that I was being cast as a "bully" candidate.  Because one of the bullies in the movie looks almost identical to me as I looked as a child, it was quite scary.  The irony is, I was the one bullied as a child and would have never considered the kind of physical violence the character commits during the film.  Perhaps that's why I didn't get the part.

EDIT:  I also had an orange juice with Suzy Cato at a funeral.

Many moons ago, I used ot work in a large bookstore in London. One day I served Bob Hoskins. Managed to get his autograph (on a credit card slip smile).

Used to work opposite the back gate of Buckinham Palace, and although I saw the Queen Mum pop out regularly, can't compete with Geektastic's tale.

Not many close encounters .. was in Buckingham Palace watching when Paul McCartny was Knighted and Joan Collins got her OBE (they were filler acts while I waited for my Dad to get his MBE) .. Joan was really nice and chatted with everyone, Paul kept to himself.

I was once within tackling distance of Helen Clark (not that I would) and was once in the same elevator as John Key (not that I would yell ALLAHU AKBAR in a crowded lift).

Have strolled past and/or said hello to various telly presenters and actors. Nothing too exciting.
