Hi
I'm deaf and am inquiring about text capable two way radios - hand held units. I'd like to be able to use them when in the bush with another person. I imagine they'd be like other two way radios with a short range - maybe 5kms? Note that the area of use will include hilly terrain.

AFAIK the only brand available in NZ is Tait Electronics, but with a price tag of $1500 per unit (or less, if it's changed). I see from googling there's such units in America, with a lower price tag. But I don't know if they're compatible with the NZ frequencies?

If anyone here has experience or knows about text capable radios, I'd like to hear from you.

Thanks, and cheers.

Garmin appear to have a product available in the NZ market, but you would need two of them..
They claim a RRP of about $700

The Tait units probably have to connect thru a dedicated trunk network, not something that's available everywhere (or without charge).

There is many brands OTHER than Tait that do Land Mobile Radio's.

Motorola, Kennword, ICOM, GME to name a couple

Be warned bring anything in from overseas that has a Radio Frequency, as they need to be type approved for NZ.

What Area are you in? as there is many dealers in NZ

Thanks for your replies.
Interesting about the Garmin. Unfortunately I already have a GPS.
Will check out those other brands. Will check with Tait again.
Am in the top of the South Island, but anticipate travelling to Chch should I find someone with such radios.

Thanks.

You really need to be a lot more specific in your requirements.

Yes Tait do such radios - they work over trunked networks and require licencing, which probably isn't what you're after.
