Wondering if there is any news on this (or indeed paying by android wave) coming to NZ anytime soon?

Unlikely - Banks in NZ like ASB and Westpac have heavily invested (from internal sources) in their PayTag. Despite what their PR says they will play nice, you'd expect Apple Pay to be available in AU first before NZ catches on.

No word from Amex but it would be logical for them to make the first move in NZ as they bypass banks into their own payments system

Aren't those Australian banks though?

Correct but their mobile strategy is not 1:1 - even the systems are not linked (Try going to ANZ/Westpac australia and ask for your NZ accounts to be transferred or even just to access your personal info). You are essentially a 'new' customer.

Hence my earlier response that it is likely AU will get Apple Pay before NZ does. If you do not want to miss out, your best bet is to get an account somehow in AU in preparation of roll out (and hope the exchange rate remains in favour of NZ)

Technically Apple Pay works in NZ now, with our current systems (Paywave) at retailers.

The catch is that you need to use an overseas bank (i.e american like Chase) card. And the local banks wont/cant let you "link" your cards to your phone.

The US is so far behind NZ with payment technology that Apple Pay looks great there.  Here, for me it is a definite 'meh'

Yeah, using the phone doesn't seem to be any more convenient than using a Paywave card (which still works when it's in your wallet).

Although I have 4 in my wallet, so I may end up charging the wrong account if I leave them there.

if it picks up more than one card it wont go through with the transfer, it comes up with an error on the terminal

It happens with the Mastercard and my AT hop card in my wallet at the same time, i have to take the CC out of my wallet

I'm not sure its more convenient, but possibly more secure because it gets your fingerprint at the time, Someone cant just wave your unopened wallet at a terminal & get a free lunch.

I've been on the trial for Semble, the mobile wallet and payments app. It's a collaboration between Paymark and Vodafone, Spark and 2degrees.

It's been great - feels like magic. Works especially well at petrol stations, walk in and read twitter on my phone while waiting in line, ask for $20 on pump 4 or whatever, put phone up to terminal, done, and gone. No need to get the wallet out.

I can't say much more at the moment but check out the site here http://semble.nz/ and I have a post on Vodafone Community here http://community.vodafone.co.nz/t5/Ideas-discussion/Semble-mobile-wallet-announced/m-p/146297

As far as I can tell this (Above) is just a replacement sim which has the NFC built in so doesn't use the NFC Capabilities of the Phone (Android) at all.

What we are waiting for Using the built in Google Wallet (Android) or Apple Pay (iPhone) in New Zealand

I had the problem of the AT terminals on buses when I had that and CC in wallet, took me a while to figure out why I had issues tagging on/off until I started taking out the AT card to tag on.

I think mobile payments like apple pay are less convenient to actual paywave card, with the card I don't need to worry about it going flat, don't need to authorise it with fingerprint, if I loose it its only $15 to replace and anyway there are still a lot of shops that don't have the paywave terminals so you are still going to have to carry your card.

There's some more details in the FAQs on the site. You'll need a Semble ready Android phone and Semble ready sim. (I'm using a Note 4.) And Semble uses the NFC antenna in your phone.

I would prefer to wait for Apple pay so it needs my fingerprint to authorise..plus I couldn't handle having to call Vodafone support if anything went wrong!!!!!

But these are issues regardless of whether you use your phone to pay for things??

I have two Paywave credit cards, an AirNZ Onesmart card, and my work access card in my wallet.  No chance I am able to leave anything in my wallet and swipe these things.  Having the ability to make payments using my phone without the $80 limit, but with fingerprint security, would be useful to me.  I have my phone on me more often than I have my wallet on me.

P.S. did you know you can still use Paywave for transactions greater than $80?  It still requires your PIN to be entered but is a bit quicker than inserting your card and waiting for it to be read.
