So last night Prime had Stargate on as the midweek movie, I happened to have a spare couple of hours and hadn't seen the movie in some years, so sat down to watch it.

Now, maybe my memory is faulty, but I'm sure that during much of the "alien language" dialog, particularly between Ra and Daniel, that there were captions, but last night, there wasn't a captions to be seen during any of the alien dialog, which made it slightly tricky to tell exactly what was going on, I mean, you could get the general gist "Ra is telling Daniel something bad", "Sharee is concerned for Daniel's safety", "these people are a bit sick of the situation and are going to come to the rescue", but the specific details were kinda hazy.

Does anybody know if this was as intended and I'm just imagining there were captions originally, or did somebody at Prime screw up?

Happen to have the original on DVD and no captions from memory. The series is also like that, but after a while you learn to understand it, so it's not so bad...

wow I just realised I can understand words from a made up sci-fi language....

Maybe you're right, but it kinda annoyed me yesterday and I don't remember being annoyed at the film originally.  I must be getting old and crotchety I think.

I wouldn't worry about it.  Until you start using it conversationally.

wrong my friend, when the asguard died they put all their technology into their ship as their legacy. That ship is capable of destroying the auri ships. The last episode of stargate ever shows this.

Will be interesting to see what the first straight to dvd movie they release next year will show as it is supposed to resolve the battle with the auri.

What I found interesting from re-watching original movie after so many years is the inconsistencies with the series:
1. They went to another galaxy on their first ever trip.
2. They had a device back at Star Gate Command which was meant to track their progress through the worm hole.
3. The Go'a'uld was some kind of light creature behind Ra's face.
4. In subsequent episodes, the Gate gives them the ability to converse with any native (kind of like the Dr's TARDIS).

Yes, I found the lack of captions slightly amusing and annoying at the same time too.

uh... no just another planet...

also... how did 4 happen? as I'm pretty sure that a lot of planets still spoke other languages, yes they did have many which english was their native language which did seem a bit stupid but hey.

Mmm, I think that JamesHip is right here, in the movie I'm fairly sure they were pretty clear that the wormhole was going to another galaxy, because I had that same thought "huh, I thought going to another galaxy required mega power, more than normal" and I resolved that internally with "oh I guess since this was a special case (the two gates were used specifically to link each other in ancient history) there must be some extra power or something.

You're right: the Universal Translator concept I must have picked up by osmosis somewhere; it was never cannoniacal law.  Here's a site which references a writer mooting the possiblity: http://system13.org/2006/08/17/languages-in-stargate-sg-1/
