I'm surprised to find how many online directories have the street addresses of business which are way out of date or no longer exist. We moved from our old work address four years ago however many online directories still show our old street address. Even hospitals which are no longer there such as Bloomfield Hospital in Lower Hutt still show up though the site is now a boarding house. I looked up AMRO Bank NZ a week ago and is listed as 36 Customhouse Quay on the AA website so I nearly went there - but it has been closed since 2009.

How can these many sites be brought up to date? Don't they have systems in place to maintain their databases? Can they check the NZ company register which has the correct address.

I contacted some websites to update our business address but there are so many directory services (4 google pages) which still have the old address.

No address information is better than incorrect information. How does one get up to date information online short of contacting every website with the latest information?

Even apps such as the 'here' map app has 'Bloomfield Hospital Emergency' at a private home address in Bloomfield Terrace, Lower Hutt. This could cause someone to rush there for medical help.

If you have a business which has been around for a while and has moved, google your business name and old address. You may be surprised how many websites have outdated information about you.

Perhaps someone at geekzone can tell me how to have online business details updated.

I'm unsure how these online directories get their info in the first place. do they use screen scrapers?

If not, I guess it's up to the companies concerned to notify the directories of their new details.

I don't know how many people use online directories these days. Google is really the go to place these days if you want to be found.

Does your website have the correct details? Then great, who cares what some random advert-laden crap has.

I disagree. I searched using Google and it gives the wrong old information. We never asked these directory sites to publish our details but since they choose display it shouldn't they be obliged to keep it up to date?

We do not even have our street address on our website. These directory websites have taken it from somewhere else and then not bothered to maintain it.
