been listening to national radio this arvo where every interviewee's speech is full of useless fillers like um and ah.

currently some woman sounds like a retard with every 3rd or 4th word an umm or ah.

aren't people taught how to speak properly any more ?

or doesn't any one care ?

Other people may get riled by posts on a forum that don't have sentences starting with capital letters.

I get driven potty by the poor spelling and grammar that I encounter - and a complete inability exhibited by a significant number of organisations to proof read anything.

After 11 years, I have just about mastered understanding spoken Nuzild although even now there are some I encounter that I have to ask to repeat themselves!

I watched some TV news and things from the 70's and 80's and NZ was better spoken then than it seems to be now, at least on TV.

Please do not use a term for a congenital  disability in this type of context.

I used to be a spelling and grammar pedant myself until my son was diagnosed with dyslexia and dyspraxia.  I now appreciate how difficult it is for some people.
I agree though that incorrect grammar and spelling is unacceptable in any form of formal communication, be it a job application letter, corporate website, proposal document, news article, media release, etc.

It's pretty normal IMO - especially when the interviewee may not be entirely comfortable or a little nervous.
Simon Mercep is the host of afternoons.  I find that I don't like his interviewing technique much - sometimes his questions are a little random and off-topic, which suggests to me that he doesn't do any research on the topic to be discussed.  I suspect that the interviewees may find this off-putting.  One thing's for sure - and that is if the interviewer has gone to the trouble of doing some research, the follow-up questions will be relevant, and the whole interview much more interesting, flowing, and informative.  But "afternoons" is light entertainment.
I know I "um and ah".  My wife doesn't - but she worked as a radio announcer herself, and would have had that thrashed out of her.  As a consequence, she's a very good public speaker (and I'm a lousy one).

No More Gaps and Permafill could be excess filler words.

You've used the correct term for the little sounds and word that people speak. So I'm surprised that you don't appear to know why people use these fillers.

Some of the reasons include:

  • signalling that the sentence is continuing
  • thinking about what to say
  • imitating someone they respect
  • a habit they've developed
  • they don't know that they are doing it
  • nervousness
  • trying to ahrd to be extra cautious and exact

i know why people use fillers.

i'm ranting about --excessive-- use of such...

eg. in the five minute piece of radio i heard, i lost count at 20+ ums and ahs

i misread your 3rd point as irritating someone they respect

haha

It hasn't been a term for that since sometime in the roaring 80's.  If you're still using it in that context you have more to worry about than how it's used in a forum post.

I suppose it is less annoying than that twat on Radio Live in the afternoons who repeats himself continuously instead of using fillers

I think I would disagree with you Mike, "Retard"  just means "stupid" or "ignorant" these days... particularly in that context. Its not like he was doing a Paul Henry
