What do you want to be able to write?  Do you want to just hack something togethor real quick, or actually write something well?  Do you have relevant knowledge and experience?

If you are asking "how can I become a professional programmer" (language is just unimportant syntax), then you want a Computer Science major in a degree from your nearest university.

If you are asking "how can I hack togethor a guest book for my website", then look for an existing script and go from there.

If you are asking "I'm interested in programming as a hobby", then look for your local polytechnique/university and see if they have a computer programming 101 type course, the language the course is taught in is largely unimportant, it's the principles you need to learn.

Hi James, thanks for your reply.  Hack something together, tut tut.  A couple of years experience in the real word (does such a place exist?) but want to keep up to speed and expand on current knowledge. Cheers.
