I got my latest Passport in 30 Aug 2005 and thus is an old style non chip 10 year with just New Zealand Passport on the Front and logo.
As far as I know November 1st 2005 was the first time you could get a new style chip password so their cannot be many left of my type in circulation.

As I am going to AU soon I cannot apply for a new passport (yet) as as soon as I apply my current passport will be invalid (that what I read)

Wondering how many other people have this type still.

As most people in NZ have the chip passports (maybe 99%+)  they use the electronic machines in NZ coming back into AU/NZ and I've noticed (myself) they have always been lines for people to go thru them. the NZ/AU non chip lines are usually quicker I've found.

If you're planning to travel using that passport, remember that some countries require a passport that is valid for at least another 6 months as a condition of entry.

I'm ok going to Australia..

on http://www.australia.org.nz/wltn/passports.html

"Australia requires that your passport must be valid only for the period of your intended travel in and out of Australia. There is no requirement for your passport to be valid for six months after your travel."

My 10-year one expires next month. I heard that they're considering moving back to 10 again so I'm not renewing mine until I actually need to travel.

Edit: That's not right. I had my trip in May but the passport was issued in April. It'll be expiring in the next few days if it hasn't already.

you still have a 10 year one?

All passports issued on or after 24 April 2005 - both adult and child - have a maximum passport validity of five years as a result of the Passports Amendment Act (2005). Passports that were issued prior to this date continue to remain valid until the date of expiry as stated on the biodata page. On the same day, New Zealand passports were no longer endorsed with name changes, which meant that, for example, changing to a married name required applying for a new passport.

i have a passport here that was issued on the 18th of august (so 12 days BEFORE your one) and its only valid for 5 year.

work pays for my passports so i dont really care too much, but it looks like ive just missed out again (for the thrid time) on a new type of passport. the black one, the chip one and finally the 10 year one.

As Wikipedia Got it wrong :-) (EDIT: They did get it right but doesn't explain why I have a 10 Year after that)

On November 2005 the Chip/Biometric Passports where Introduced so I was before then so I guess I got in between the change over.

As I said there are not many 10 Year non chip Passports around :-)

The Passport Amendment Act 2005 was Passed on the 21st April 2005 so this changed them from 10 Years to 5 Years.

I have _no_ idea how I still have a Valid 10 year Passport issues in August so I must be special. I can't remember 100% what happened but maybe I applied before this and it took 4 months to get issued :-)

I contacted Passports and found out why.

I applied 2 days before the Legislation Passed but due to a number of factors (they didn't like my photo) it was delayed by 4 months.

So I must have one of the only 10 Year Passports in the Country.

You'll be hoping the Australian authorities see it the same way...

I kept my photo from my first passport, sometimes like to look at it instead of the mirror ;-p

You have obviously never arrived at Sydney Airport in the Morning Rush,

Smart gate- Walk right through no wait,

Old style passport gate - 45-60 minute queue full of Pax from a million destinations,

and BTW you do not have to use smartgate, you can rock up to an immigration officer at a desk with a chip passport with no probs...

I looked mine up - issued on 19/4/05. Aside from delays, that's cutting it pretty fine :)

Was the same in Brisbane during a busy afternoon in January this year. Was rather displeased that my brother was old enough to use the chip gates in NZ but not in AUS so we had to wait approx 40 minutes for the manual desk.
