I have been doing some research on suitable global SIMs for use in Europe and came across Travel Sim. Does anyone have any experience with them?

Seems like every company that is in this business receives a lot of flak on the internet. So to me, the true acid test comes down the actual users.

I am on Spark at the moment and there is really no option to use them while I am hopping between multiple countries in Europe.

More than one telco offers ' TravelSIM ' even Vodafone NZ does, You need to provide more INFO or even a link off to the TravelSIM you are speaking of

I have used them , they worked like a charm right from day one. no issues whatsoever.

Thanks. Is it true that when you want to call a number, you must call, hang up, and wait for a call back?

yup thats how it works, but its pretty much instantaneous, and works everytime, so you shouldnt worry too much about it, i also called their center whilst travelling, and they were helpfull !!

Awesome. Any chance you went on a cruise whilst in Europe? Keen to know what coverage is like there.

Hmmmm, no didnt get to a cruise, but it worked in all cities i went to, data worked no hassles as well.

You've been of great help.

Any other tips or recommendations? Not too sure whether to top up a few hundred dollars now or do so on the road.

Dont go putting too much upfront. Just 1 x $100 for starters will do, and you can always top up on the go

I did the Greek islands whilst using a UK based SIM almost a year ago today. Found it was easier just to buy a pre-paid and use that.
This looks like a decent SIM though. The coverage in the Greek islands is OK when on an island but in-between there little to nothing depending on where your going

With the cruise I am going on, we are visiting multiple countries so a prepay card may not work well from a cost-perspective.

I'd recommend 3, the UK network. They have abolished roaming charges to most of Europe, as well as USA and NZ. Buy a SIM on ebay (a couple of pounds, delivered to NZ), activate it online, then just top up and use. Their 10-pound bundle is very similar to the $19 packs available in NZ, but you can use them in any country

I think they'd probably call foul if you used this long-term, but seems a good solution for a month or two

There are *lots* of providers out there all offering similar services these days. Looking at that product it doesn't look great from a pricing perspective, and obviously doesn't offer data.

At the end of the day it's really going to depend what your requirements are and what countries you're visiting. If data is all you're after Globalgig are great, you can get 3GB for $50 for a month across the US and most of Western Europe.

If you have a mix of data and calls and are only visiting a handful of countries moving to Vodafone is always an option as their roaming is vastly superior to Spark.

Globalgig looks quite good. Can't buy it locally in NZ though, although I see DSE in Australia stocks their SIMs.

If you are still keen on the Travel sim you originally mentioned, it's available from AA stores with $10 airtime (instead of $5 at the www.travelsim.co.nz website) and for AA members $5 discount.

I used ekit last year - came free with some Eurail tickets we purchased before going. Same deal with dialling the number, the system calls you back, you answer and then it tells you how long you can talk for with your current balance and then it dials the number. I visited Switzerland, Austria, Czech Republic, Italy, Croatia, - no issues with it. There is lots of free wifi in Europe so you probably won't use much data.
