Can't help with your first question, but in regards to the second: YES.

While not compulsory in NZ you would be silly to drive without it. Not only does it cover you if you stuff up, but (with the appropriate level of cover) it covers you even if you are in no way at fault.

Insurance costs can differ greatly based on your location, car and driving history. Best bet is to use a couple of online quotes to get an idea on costs/coverage and than shop around.

AA insurance have always been good to us and very reasonable price wise. Other major brands include AMI, State, Tower, Youi, Clubauto, Vero etc. Or try through your bank.

If you aren't worried about your car so much, just get 3rd party insurance. In the case of you hitting someone elses car and it's your fault, then the insurance company pays to get the other persons car fixed, but not yours.

you really need to shop around. every insurer has different formula to calculate your premium depending on your demographic. so we cannot tell you who's cheaper without you revealing your entire life. even then we still won't know.

If you trust your driving and you are confidence that you shall never make mistake, you don't need insurance.

I didn't know perfect humans exist ...

Or perfect judicial systems. If the Porsche driver sues you for damages to his car you can go to court and prove you didn't make a mistake. Good luck.

It's all the other nutters that we need to worry about.  Get insurance!!!  It should be compulsory IMO.

...and I have no idea what that product is, or where you can get it.  You can buy odour 'eating' sprays in the supermarket?  Or light a match?

Lazy is such an ugly word, I prefer to call it selective participation

That is the dumbest thing I have ever heard. I am hoping there was meant to be a sarcastic wink in there somewhere. Accidents happen and you don't want to be paying for an accident for years.

If you are getting insurance for house and contents too, see if you can go with someone who will do car and house to save some money. We go through ASB for banking and insurance and it is pretty reasonable.

Try Vultr using this link and get us both some credit:

No, it isn't.

I have known a handful of people who didn't take insurance ever. I personally won't bother with car insurance if I live in Masterton or West Coast (despite my cars are brand new, fully paid) . The risk there are too small. You can further reduce the risk if never drink alcohol, only drive when you're 100%, no night time or bad weather driving etc.

You're much better off saving/invest the money rather than paying others to manage your risk.

Remember, you're only needed to pay if you're at fault.

There is some good logic in there, until one day your car is stolen.

If you are new to New Zealand roads, this simply isn't good advice.

What if your car suffers a mechanical failure which leads to an accident, even if you're not 'at fault' per se, you will still be liable.

Besides that, I can sleep easier knowing that if my car gets damaged by another party the insurance will cover repair/replacement and they do all the hard work of chasing up the 'at fault' party.

Did Eric Clapton really think she looked wonderful...or was it after the 15th outfit she tried on and he just wanted to get to the party and get a drink?

You can reduce the risk by having trackers with geofence and capability to cut off the fuel. It costs less than a year insurance.

I like the she'll be right mentality. Has saved them for centuries, no need to change
