Totally my own fault, I moved the TiVo and didn't reconnect the antenna, opps.

So I logged on to TV3 on demand on my mobile (well I started with the web and moved to the app when it told me to), hoping I could catch up the missing episode.  I could.

But didn't see a second of advertising.

How are these programs now funded?  Are ISPs now paying the bill by buying capacity off the VoD farms?

johnr: Huh?

What's not to understand john?

In the past I always watched it on FTA which came with some ads every 7 or 8 minutes.

Last night I just watched it on my mobile with no ads at all.  There wasn't even in app ads either.

So what's paying for my viewing now?

When TVNZ On Demand first launched their app it didn't include ads either.

likely for several reasons:

1) no ads drives uptake of the app
2) it's very hard to do ad insertion into streaming video very well so they had to launch without it, and then put it in later.

Same is probably true for Mediaworks.  Expect to see ads on there at some point.

I've watched a few things on 3Now, and they all did have ads...

I've noticed that the ads are starting to get longer and longer.

Also the TVNZ ad on the tv at the moment is complete lie, it shows the guy from Shortland street just picking up device after device and with no trouble carrying on watching. If you were to do that for real you have to watch an ad every time you change device.

No not on my phone, but this was within the app anyway.

Of course I'm happy as that my program wasn't interrupted.

I'd have thought that ad insertion would be all automated.  Just make the stream with ads in it.

Personally I'd be happy to pay $1 a week to have 3 and tvnz on my appletv box without any ads.

ya I've started to notice that on youtube.

On stuff the ads are now so long that I never even attempt to play the video on their site at all.

I use Ad-block on Youtube now, it is too annoying otherwise (sorry google and content creators).

Regarding tvnz and tv3, I would expect when they buy the rights for terrestrial it would not be much extra to add on the 7-day watch online afterwards rights when they do the deal.

Ha ha.  From the title I first thought this was going to be a discussion about having left a 'good' wife, ending up with a 'bad' one, and wanting to change your mind and go back. Sooo disappointing as that would have been interesting!  But I guess this is a TV program.

Anyhooo....  Your complaining about no ads?  Technical issues aside I just guessed the revenue stream was supported by the original viewing making subsequent availability (which I assume is covered under the same rights to show) less of an issue to generate revenue from, at least until they can figure it out.  I do notice watching on-demand more now that the 'pauses' are there where I assume ads would be placed between chapters, but then 9/10 times the program just resumes.  I only notice ads very occasionally, and even then its only a single 30 sec clip.

Lazy is such an ugly word, I prefer to call it selective participation

I've had this happen before as well. Adblock seems to work with TV3 on the computer (they have a warning advising you not to use it)
Sometimes on the mobile app, I get no add either. Seems to be when there is a 'glitch'. Maybe you load an episode, it plays an add, then you go back and reload the same episode, and for some reason it thinks ads are already played and it skips them. For the whole episode.

No.  I'm interested just to understand the current dynamics.

I see MediaWorks is taking ISPs to court currently.  I assume they're attempting to protect something, but what?
