The NZHerald no nonsense text site was offline for a day or so. I feared the worst but it's back. : ).

http://mobile.nzherald.co.nz/

I like the ability to see all the national headlines in one glance. No other news site offers that. It is by far the best on small screens. Data use is very low. Good for slow connections or sims with very limited data plans.

It works well when the network is severely congested and nothing else will load. (This is perfect for civil emergencies etc. The web does not do enough thinking about this. Applications are taking the lead.)

There is also:

http://m.nzherald.co.nz/

and the traditional:

http://www.nzherald.co.nz/

Something I really like is NZHerald allows you to make the decision and does not automatically force a particular mode. You are free to choose the most appropriate site for your platform and taste.

Which do you use?

Yep, I also like that site for the reasons you listed. It's the only news site I'll bother with on my phone, meaning it's my primary.

I wish more sites like that would offer a bare bones variant.

I always use the traditional view. I can never find the bits I always read otherwise. A pet hate of mine is being unable to read the quizzes on stuff because they expect you to use their app. I don't want to switch out of my browser for each news site I go to. So I just stopped reading the quiz.

Excellent, I was worried they had removed it.

Lucky their website is apparently good, their app is the worst news app I've ever used for one reason: it goes back to the top of the story list after you read a story. Their Google Play reviews are really poor because of it.

Does anyone know what The Herald has done to their comments? Each comment used to have a hyperlink on the poster's name, so you could click and read their other comments. Now it's non existent?

Oh yeah, another reason I dislike Stuff's web page. Commenting no longer works accessing it with my iPad.
