Thought I'd check here before selecting someone randomly.

Can anyone recommend someone in Dunedin who can install CAT6 into a few rooms in an older house in Dunedin? A friend of mine has purchased an older house in Dunedin and wants hassle free wired networking into a few rooms. This would be in addition to wireless. Some things (like gaming) just do better with a wired connection.

He doesn't mind how it happens (walls/floor etc) but just wants a couple of jack points in a couple of rooms.

This is the company I called when I needed some cabling done. The guy who came out seemed to know what he was doing, but I can't vouch for anyone else who works there.

I'll have a dig around and see if I can find the receipt from 2011. I discussed this on GZ back then.

You've been blessed. They won't be spray painting outside my house until 2018.

I used Bob at Coastal Electrical (027 581 1055) for my 1920s Bungalow in Opoho. He replaced all the old electrical wiring, replaced all the lights and ran some cat6 and added sockets around the place for PCs and CCTV cameras. He's an owner/operator and has a good attention to detail. He charges $49.50+GST per hour which isn't the cheapest but isn't terrible either, the main reason I keep going back to him is that he always shows up on time and does a tidy job.

So when they wire cat6, do you select the end point for the cabling to exit at, which then plugs directly into your switch?

e.g.

Please wire 2 jackpoints in bedroom A and B, and I want to have the switch in the wardrobe in Bedroom C.

?

ideally you install a home network enclosure like this

All jacks are wired back to the one point. This is where you put your network gear.

the one in the picture (mine) also combines then splits the tv antenna and sat dish, as well as having the incoming phone line and master splitter. in my case, i can decide whether I want a jack to be network or for a phone and patch it in accordingly.
I use yellow patch cables for phone and red for network, and as you can see, only have one phone jack in the house at this point.

All the cables end up at my office where I have PDL wall plate with multiple cat6 modules (https://www.electricaldirectltd.co.nz/ecommerce.php?func=14&DCI=252&DPT=p&DPI=433&S=2b6516192b0b4f3918616a2259729e46). The cables that run to the lounge and bedroom also have wallplates with network ports at the other end, the cables that run to the CCTV just have plugs at the end of them that plug directly into the cameras.

Edit: Andrew's suggestion is much better but unfortunately I don't have anywhere to put it (well, no where my wife would let me put it..)

Did it myself.

I have some regrets about placement, I chose the top of a wardrobe, so i'll probably move it sometime soon. Starting to do minor reno's so it wont be a major to move.

So what are the components(boxes).

The ? antenna connections at the top are just so what you can share the sky antenna cable with multiple rooms rather than transmitting information from one room to another?

Any regrets or things you would do differently is you were doing it this weekend ?
Any functionality you didnt include at the time but wished you had ?
What are the dimensions/make of the cabinet ?

Is there an ONT in there ?

A.

It looks like a DSL link so no ONT for that.

I've used Southern Electrical myself, found them pretty good to deal with.

So top to bottom: (we'll ignore the modem)

TV combiner/splitter, takes terrestrial and satellite signals, combines them, and splits the signal to all rooms. It also amplifies the signal which is needed when splitting so many ways.

Telephone patch block, provides 6 phone connection points and one DSL connection point. Same line, nothing fancy.

DSL master filter, incoming phone line comes straight to this which feeds the to the telephone patch block.

Patch blocks, just like the patch panels in a rack but smaller. All cabling comes here, and is patched into either a network switch or phone port depending on the need.

The rest is pretty self explanatory.

Regrets/Lessons
Mostly location, its hard to get to to change things. This wouldn't normally be an issue, (and really isn't too bad) but there is also a server sitting in front of it which can make things a bit awkward.

Not sure of size, it fits a 19inch rack module vertically from memory

Brand is Hubbell I believe.
