Hi,

With the Nespresso coffee machines - do they do a decent sized cup of coffee or are they limited to those little wee cups you see in their ads?

Cheers,

Nick

You have the Espresso and Lungo options - the lungo is set from factory at about 110ml but you can adjust the amount of water you want.

+1  freitasm.

I have a Nespresso and here's how I have it configured but it depends how you like it flavoured.

You can configure your own pulls by pressing and holding the buttons (once it's warmed up) and releasing when you're happy with the amount of coffee/taste.

I personally enjoy a full cup of coffee with either the Fortissio Lungo for a good medium strength or Ristretto for a stronger buzz.

I have the 'large' button set to around a 100ml which I find more than adequate for both capsules.
I find any more than that, the fluid comes out  dark-milky and bitter. (Ymmv depending on taste, but that works for me.)

So I turn it on, pop a capsule in, press 1 "large".
Once done, I pop out the capsule, then press another "large" of just water.

10/10 produces a reliably cup of good coffee.*

For the small button, if you have any short black cups (teensy wee espresso cups/mugs) then I have it set to pour enough water to fill my set of 4 cups I've got (sorry, don't know the size.)

*Good coffee is relative, I personally detest the chemical taste of every instant, and most barista's over extract the coffee  and have the water too hot for a good long black and just make a burned and bitter mess!

But given your average kiwi drowns their coffee in milk and sugar they get away with it!

Auckland and ChCh have nespresso shops that you could visit and get some free taste testings etc. I think Wellington also has a store.
In ChCh the store is within Ballantynes.

reminds me, I need to stock up on capsules...

Wellington Nespresso shop is on Lambton Quay.

As above, regardless what people say, Nespresso consistently produces good coffee. Not the best coffee but not the worst coffee. Good coffee and you always get consistency.

Compared to cafes around Wellington, it's good. In Wellington you can find bitter, horrible coffee from good beans because the barista has no clue on how to pull. Or you can find good coffee - it's a lottery. Actually just found Neo on Willis St and it's a damn good cup.

Wellington does indeed have a Nespresso store - I visit ever few months to get more capsules.

Some machines (like the U) actually have 3 drink size buttons -
Ristretto, 25ml
Espresso, 40ml
Lungo, 110ml

This reminds me: need more capsules, and free coffee when buying there anyway.

I called in to the Wellington store a week or so ago and enquired about the Monsoon Malabar edition. The lady apologised and said it was no longer available - but since I had told her MM was my favourite, she popped out back and rustled up 16 capsules which she just gave me FOC! Result!

All I need now is a machine in which to use them..! 'Er Indoors says we can have one but for some reason I can't really be bothered to get to the bottom of, "not yet". Pff. Whatever. Last time I looked with her, the machine was 'the wrong shade of red for our kitchen'.

The Novotel in Wellington, where I stay from time to time, does have the machines though, so I just take a few if I am going there.

In the same area as Neo (which I do like) are Flight (Cnr Willis & Dixon)  and CanCan (Willis Street) (they just changed their name to Parisienne or similar) - while I do not partake of the French pastries I have been advised they are among the best in wellington and made by the lovely French couple running the café.

French cafes in Wellington are good - and include the Breton and Louis Sargeant. Hard to beat those.

are those plastic capsules BPA free?

else putting hot water thru them seems like a silly idea to me if youre going to drink the output

My personal favourite coffee shop is Customs on Ghuznee St - or Memphas Belle. I've never been one for Nespresso coffee but I'm spoilt by having good coffee at work and home also.

Nespresso capsules are aluminium, unlike the "compatible" ones.

If we're talking our favourite Wellington coffee shops, I nominate Lamason in Lombard Street, although Memphis Belle and The Hangar (both Dixon Street) are pretty good.

I currently work about an equal distance from all three of these so am spoilt for choice, but I just applied for another job on the other side of the CBD yesterday and if I get it there will probably be a month of average beverage until I find a replacement brew - as freitasm says, many places in Wellington seem to think bitter is better.

Nice result.

I see a lot of the Nespresso machines are on special right at the moment, and I think there is a cashback deal on at the moment also - right now is the time to buy!!

(I actually have a brand new Nespresso inissia & Aeroccino3 unopened and in original box to sell - have 2 Nespresso machines already - DM me if interested; Mods - remove this line if inappropriate)
