Anyway to report idiots calling our landline and advertising over it? Or a Opt out listing?

Opt-out here:
http://www.marketing.org.nz/services/do_not_call

Of course you'll still receive unsolicited calls from overseas or from local telemarketers who aren't members etc.

Which will be the vast majority of them. That is why it will be a waste of time. I opted out, but still get them all the time. Most are scam calls.

Most Cold Callers use an unlisted number, so Caller ID is very handy.

I don't answer any calls when the Caller ID says "Private Number". And if the caller is actually legitimate, they can always leave a message on my Answerphone.

It doesn't stop them calling, but at least you know not to answer the phone, and most of them hang up after 6 rings.

I tell ALL charities and ALL advertisers that this is a private personal phone number and that I do no charity/survey/business/etc on the phone as there are too many scam callers from India etc.

I just say "I don't take unsolicited calls" and hang up. I had nothing for about a month, and then got three withing 20 minutes while eating dinner last night - which was pretty darned annoying. One was for DVS, one I cut off before they got to their product, and I can't remember what the third was.

I'm starting to wonder whether an unlisted number might be the way to go?

Plus, about a week ago, I had a run of calls where the phone gives one or two rings and then stops which, based on some discussion I had with colleagues at work,  I assume is probably telemarketers using some sort of automated system to step through numbers sequentially and find out which ones are valid for later calling?

This was one of the benefits of going naked with broadband but no land line by the way.

$50 a month to have a service that was mostly used taking calls from sales or survey people. Switched to cell phones and data services for calls such as FaceTime and Skype, and never looked back.

I have a confidential, unlisted phone number and it receives unsolicited calls. It seems some of it is blind dialing from automated machines, and some of it is numbers being sold like email addresses.

People often mistake me for an adult because of my age.

Keep calm, and carry on posting.

I don't understand why people think they have to answer their phones during dinner - I certainly don't!

Because I have a very unwell elderly relative that I need to do things for, and something might have gone wrong.

Which is also why I can't take it off the hook at night, and have consequently received the occasional "Microsoft Technical Services" scam call and its ilk in the wee small hours.

I don't think a landline gives $50 a month worth of return these days.

There is a market for sure for a large buttoned landline style basic phone that connects via cellular connection.

The moment you put a SIM card in it it suddenly has to do everything, but a land line looking cell phone would sell great for the oldies, who only need it to make and receive calls.

There is a market for some sort of caller authentication codes that you can give to friends and family. Too many overseas calls at 4am, having older family overseas I don't want to do an outright block.
