A new Kiwi-owned website has been launched to rival Trade Me.

However, onoffer.co.nz is not an auction site like Trade Me.

Founder and chief executive, Jason Gibb, says Onoffer.co.nz is a traditional Kiwi buy, sell and exchange platform.

“Auctions are more of an American concept, whereas Kiwis like hunting out a bargain and haggling for a deal then and there.

“We grew up with the concept of ‘ONO - or nearest offer’ and that’s the concept behind this site.

“We made a site that allows Kiwis to get a deal by making an offer.”

Onoffer.co.nz enables sellers to post an item with a price and stipulate for how long the offer is on the table.

Buyers make their best offer based on what they think the item they want is actually worth and the seller can see all those offers.

“No waiting around for an auction to close. The nearest offer wins.”

Gibb says onoffer.co.nz is the only uniquely Kiwi site of its kind.

It will be cheaper than Trade Me for users and there are no percentage success fees at all.

Charities will be able to list items on the site for free.

Photos and YouTube video clips can be posted for free and every listing gets some Homepage listing exposure for free.

As well as buy and sell functions, onoffer.co.nz features a swap function.

Users can also post items to the site that they want to give away.

“One man’s junk is another’s treasure and this function will save many trips to the tip,” Gibb says.

making an offer seems to rely on uninformed buyers posting offers that don't meet market value, whereas an auction has a start/reserve and the price is visibly given the other bids.

Why as a seller would I use onoffer?

This is the ideal place for those people who post comments like "I have a spare Nokia, some magic beans, some pocket lint and $10 - are you interested in a trade?" on your auction for a $3000 laptop...!

Just had a look at their site.  Not the most modern of designs, but tidy and super simple to follow.  I think the idea has merit.  How many times do you see "would you accept" in the TM questions (puts you off bidding).  It would be cool to see features like time periods when making an offer.
