So it seems that it is illegal to sell second-hand region 2 UK DVDs which do not have the NZ Rating sticker on. Thanks Trademe for nixing my listings!

It also seems that you can get your DVDs inspected, rated and fit for sale, for the patently ludicrous sum of $17 per DVD plus 17c for the sticker. I am therefore resigned that there is no simple way to get any money for the 150+ DVDs and 40+ box sets I have lying around.

I am therefore wondering if there are any hostels, shelters, youth centres or other charities which may benefit from a donation of DVDs which they can then actually use for the entertainment of their beneficiaries rather than actually selling them for profit.

Anyone got any ideas or suggestions for something suitable in the Auckland area?

Do ypu actually have to get them rated if they already have a rating in this country. Can you just get the appropriate sticker and put it on?

What genres? I imagine somewhere like womens refuge or starship might take kids ones.

Your local hospice might take some too.

We are selling more and more stuff through Facebook these days, most areas have a local buy/sell/exchange page, maybe try that?

Lazy is such an ugly word, I prefer to call it selective participation

Yes you do have to have that defaced with a stupid ugly sticker on them to legally sell because of some BS backwards laws that pre-date the idea of being able to find a quick and easy synopsis of things before you buy them.

Kidz First Children's Hospital can always use age appropriate DVDs and Playstation (2&3) games. We have donated a bit of stuff to them.

It's a 'good idea' donating them but...

Would charities be legally allowed to show the DVD's... (going by the legal notice that pops up on every DVD, they may not be able to). The wording is:

The proprietor has licensed this DVD for private home use only. All other rights are reserved.

It is then is fairly specific that the DVD cant be used in hospitals, schools, hostels, etc. They even mention oil rigs!

Some notices even say you're not allowed to lend them to other people to use!

I don't know - I would presume that either it doesn't matter in the real world OR that these places have actually got a license to show content in public.

Lets face it, there are countless shops, bars, homes, hostels etc that must technically be "breaking the law" and show movies or allow others to watch movies or listen to music in their establishment.

Daft innit - I am just trying to avoid throwing the damn things in a landfill - If I can get some money out of it then all the better. If I can't make any money and can gift them or let others get some use out of them then great - I am happy with that.

Seems however that stone-age copyright/rating laws wants me to either hold on to them until either they or I are dust, or throw them in the bin.

Good idea - sadly only a relatively small handful would be "age appropriate" for a kids hospital!

Having followed the links that TradeMe gave on the cancellation of my auction and then having emailed the appropriate authority, it seems that you "legally" can't just slap a sticker on yourself...

That said - and now I come to think of it - I am not sure whether I could find some way of ordering the stickers without the accompanying "validation" service and just sell them anyway. Who the hell would know?

Email I received is as below:

"The first step in the process is to register on our website www.fvlb.org.nz Once you have registered you will need to complete a submission for each title. I attach an instruction sheet on how to complete our submission form. The cost for each DVD to be processed will be $17 + GST. Once your submission has been approved the cost of each label will be $0.07 + GST.

You will need to send a copy of each DVD in for examination to our address below. This is so we can confirm that the product you are selling is identical to what we have previously issued a rating for in NZ.

Please contact me should you have any further queries."

I would have the same issue here with the "legality" of it - they can't legally buy them from me nor re-sell them without the rating verification, making it economically unviable for either party!

You cant sell them, but you can give them away. Maybe as a free extra when you purchase a prepaid courier bag :)

It might depend on what you're trying to get rid of. Obviously you wouldn't send violent action films to The Ronald McDonald House or a battered women's shelter. That's just bad taste.
What movies and TV series do you have?

There's also a website called Freecycle which allows you to just give stuff away.

If they have a rating in NZ why not just scan and print the appropriate label then stick them on with blutack for the Trademe photo? Take them off again afterwards. No one needs to know.
