So....arrived Bangkok. Turned iPhone 6 Plus on.

Automatically joins local network AIS, I get the usual text messages saying welcome to Thailand, get your Vodafone information here etc.

Pretty tired, head to airport hotel. Since phone is set to take the time off the network I don't remember to look, set an alarm to ensure I am up in plenty of time for flight today.

And am woken at 0830 NZ time (0330 local!) because the phone has in fact NOT taken the time from the network and thinks it is still NZ time..!!!

Moral...never assume - check!

Wake up at 0330? Don't need an alarm, that's jetlag!

Could be worse, could have missed flight due to time difference....

I set the alarm because I wanted to guard against the possibility of missing today's flight (and breakfast) in case the jet lag made us sleep late.

Annoyingly both SWMBO and I were sound asleep when the alarm went off, then entirely unable to go back to sleep!

Do you have automatic time zone detection turned on? Are location services and data access required to use that feature?

I thought the time came from the phone network you were now connected to, no need for location services or data access. Eg works on a phone, not on a tablet.

Of course, if you left Airplane mode on it wouldn't work.....

I don't know how this works. But technically the time is exactly the same in another country.

It is just the timezone that has changed.

If automated timezone change is not enabled on the device then what will happen?

If the network is sending time in UTC? Then nothing will happen. Displayed time on phone will remain the same.

So how it works? ;; )

Another lesson for me.

I was on a 7am Auckland to Wellington flight this Tuesday, and I was relying on my phone for a 5am alarm...
guess what, the phone alarm didn't snooze at all
When I eyes opened, it was 6.12am already, thank god I arrived at the airport at 6.45, heard my name in the airNZ final passenger call.... 5 more min then I could have missed that morning work flight....
Don't rely on technology....my love and hate of high tech :S

Yes it was all fully set up to take the time from the network, and has always done so in the past.

That's usually because you turned it off in your sleep (vs hitting snooze)

NITZ support on mobile networks is an exception, not the norm. The reality is only a small % of networks around the world actually have this turned on, and even here in NZ Vodafone have only had it enabled since around the end of last year.

In both Android and iOS if you have automatic time sync enabled and no NITZ server is available the phone will use NTP to update the time. This is how most phones set their time automatically - not by using NITZ.

NITZ is only enabled over packet switch so don't expect the old Nokia 5110i to take advantage of it

Galaxy note, as soon as it detects roaming it will display both local and NZ time on the lock screen.

I also uses wake up service when travelling. I was so tired at one point and I am glad that the hotel dude actually came and physically wakes me up because I wasn't answering the phone after 10 times. I'm glad he did or I would have miss the flight for that day! I think this was either in Dubai or Singapore.
