I need to replace the female dc plug for my laptop charger cord. I have a spare plug with bare end wire but the positive connections inside the plug are thinner than the one I am replacing it with. The charger has a 6.3 Amp output so I think the connections and wire in the plug I have may be too thin.

How do the 'solder tag' replacement connectors work? I have seen them but never used one. Will I be able to solder it with my horrible thick non fine point,  non temperature controlled burn any flux in sight soldering iron?

Alternatively where can I get a bare end dc plug which will support higher current?

I have seen some on ebay that come with a short piece of cable and an inline joiner sold as a repair connector. That may be your best bet.

no nz shipping but im sure you will find the same thing from someone else if you look.

IME soldering those DC plugs is at best a temporary repair as they have no real strain relief on them.

This is turning out harder than it should be. I bought a 5.5mm x 2.5mm replacement plug, guess what doesn't fit. Despite the fact I have a 5.5mm x 2.5mm plug which fits nicely. Problem is the lead I have uses two little pins inside the plug for the positive side. Like this one:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/115cm-5-5mmx2-5mm-Single-Pin-Male-Laptop-Notebook-DC-Power-Cable-Cord-Black-/321445025088?hash=item4ad79dd540:g:P-IAAOSw3ydVz379

I am not sure the plugs in this style are suitable for a charger rated 6.3 Amp.

The replacement I bought was in this style:
http://www.google.co.nz/imgres?imgurl=http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/71TWszKfxvL._SY355_.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.amazon.com/2-5mm-5-5mm-9-5mm-DC-Plug/dp/B0002KR28Q&h=355&w=355&tbnid=Xoe4cpuaWqcmyM:&docid=bLpLH5uoHyqiJM&ei=GP8uVtGjHaPDmAXJlaKYDQ&tbm=isch&ved=0CCQQMygJMAlqFQoTCNGPzd_p4cgCFaMhpgodyYoI0w

But it sits too loose.

The original had 4 metal prong for the positive side. One of the 4 metal prong would contain more metal than the plugs which have the two little pins.
