I may have been one of the last to cotton on to this, but just in case not I thought I'd share what I discovered a few months back...
Many public libraries have signed up to a Zinio-delivered service, whereby members of the libraries can borrow magazines to read on an electronic device (apps for Android and iOS plus computer-based viewing). It appears there is no limit on the number of magazines that can be borrowed at any one time, nor how long you can 'borrow' them for (I wondered why mine weren't auto-deleting like borrowed e-books!).
Depending on the library, they may have hundreds of titles - my local library has a small but useful selection (Sound and Vision, Atlantic Monthly, Economist, Wired, New Yorker etc), but Akld Library reports it has over 500 titles. It's going to save me money as I won't bother renewing my NZ Autocar sub; and my wife's ectastic as it has all the key fashion mags!
If you're not aware of this but interested, here are some of the links to the biggest libraries:
Auckland
Wellington
Christchuch
And a basic Google search or check of your local library's website will show if they've got the service available.
