That's gutting. Ignoring his short lived but firey Rugby career he was a stand up guy who had a heart of gold.

So very sad. A few months after he returned from the 1995 World Cup he came and had a pre-Christmas breakfast with the staff at my workplace (our manager had been his boss when he worked at ASB). He was so very sweet with everyone, wouldn't touch the food until all of us had our serving, and apparently had been up half the night putting up his Mum's Christmas tree. After patiently posing for photos with everyone he went on to Auckland Hospital where one of our colleagues was very ill with cancer. He stayed with her for ages - it made her year. Many years later he walked into a bank where she was working (having thankfully fully recovered) and he remembered her, stopping to chat. Not only a legend on the rugby field but one of the world's genuinely good blokes.

Thoughts with the family and extended family at this time, it's not been an easy one. I hope he and Jerry Collins have some good banter sessions up there!

Sad.

FYI, his This Is Your Life is on TVNZ OnDemand as from yesterday. I watched it over tea at daughters tonight, a great watch.
